964 conversion to 3.4 996?

Just wondering if anyone has ever done such a conversion and how difficult it would be. I really like the classic 964 coupe lines and the idea of a 3.4 tip eng/tranny combo would suit me just fine.

Just dreaming right now...

Cheers,

Joe

Seems like it would be easier to take a 996 an backdate the outside than what you are talking about.
Anything could be done with enough money and effort but...

But what if you found a 964 w/o eng/trans for <$10k....I like the idea of a water cooled 996 engine over a bowtie V8.

Any dreamers out there?

It would be far easier to do this swap to a 964 than it would a 911.

The 964 has a removeable center tunnel under tray, so you could access it to install the coolant lines. The front oil cooler and A/C condensor areas are also pretty similar in arrangement as the 996 radiators.

I'd say it's doable.

Why not a normal 964 3.6/tip combo? They are out there.

The dimensions are all wrong.

Wheelbase is different, windshield angle is different. The 996 is physically larger.

Might as well try the same thing to a Camaro.

But a more highly evolved 996 motor with four valve technology, coil on plug ignition, more top end with a better torque curve etc would be hard to pass up...

Also, these motors seem to be more plentiful with every passing day which means more to chose from, with lower mileage and better prices as the supply of air cooled 3.6s diminish.

I know that it's just a matter of time before someone does this conversion. I just wish they'd hurry up so I could see how it turned out!

Cheers,

Joe

yes they are very cheap , but you need a new one about every 40 kmiles and if you track it every 5kmiles . You also need a lot of electronics to get it running right . I sold a 3.6 to a Guy who put in in a VW Bus ,he finally got it running after 1 year and almost 100 USD ,

I own a Watercooled Vanagon Pick up and just happen to have a 996 motor I would like to mate.

I would very much like to talk w someone who has done this conversion.

The link above does not work.
