another widebody question.... dont kill me, I searched
Hey guys,
ok well after looking at thousands of pictures and information threads I still cannot come to a complete idea of the different widebody's. how many stages are there? Here is a picture of my car... It seems to me that there are cars with even skinnier rear ends than mine: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2005550&l=3859e&id=1225530344 i want to do some sort of widebody upgrade but I am not sure... some seem wider than others. Also does the front of the car (width wise) stay the same with the widebody upgrades (flares) Please advise. Thank you, Paul stype1990@aol.com |
Generally speaking a "widebody" version of your current car involves adding 2" of flare both front and rear. The stock front fenders are loosely considered 7" flares and the rears are 9" flares (more or less corresponding to the maximum wheel width possible). 911 turbos, for instance have 9" front flares and 11" rear, so in order to duplicate that, you'd need to add essentially 2" of flare to both ends.

There is turbo,RS,RSR,934,935,930S probably more but you get my idea all with various degree of wideness is that a good phrase I have for instance 930 flares and if you search someone like 930reaper he has a RSR replica and there is every range imaginable.

There are 911s that are narrower than yours -- they were made before 1978.

Turbo look is probably the most popular wide body conversion done to the cars like yours
In common porsche community language you have a 7" front fender and a 8" rear fender on you cabrio now. The Turbo look has front 9" flares, Rear 11" flares, sculpted rockers to match, rear bumper extensions, and if factory a turbo front lower spoiler to take up the extra room left over by the front flares. The tail spoiler should be fitted to match the aerodynamic forces created with the front spoiler. However if you don't plan driving at higher speeds, then you can opt to go with a smooth rear deck . Porsche did something similar to this with the 89 speedster. (The front just had corner filler pieces for match up with the fenders with no rubber lip spoiler hanging down) You have other options on front and rear spoilers and bumpers, depending on your tastes Have Fun |
JMHO: your car is very nice as is...and those conversions aren't cheap, if you want to achieve correct look.

Done properly you can easily spend $10k and up (depending on wheel choice) as the whole car would end up getting repainted
Yeah- you would be surprised at how many shades of black there are ! |
Along with this forum and the "search" button.....GT Racing's online catalog does a fare job in breaking this down. Just to confuse matters, you can often squeeze in larger rims than the qouted fender would indicate by upto an inch with good planning.

i'm doing one as we speak....alot of work and $$

Sell your carrera to someone who will love the car for what it is ;) and buy a wide body.
