New, however, is the roof-mounted spoiler that deploys from the leading edge of the rear window. Front active spoilers are also said to be in the works, which this car’s odd, droopy lower front air dam and hash-style flaps on the fascia must be intended to impersonate.

Interesting if true.

I thought the nose was going to be much higher to meet Europe's pedestrian impact laws.

The front fender bulges seem a little more prominent/"proud" of the hood, like on earlier cars. The valance with the front air intakes protrude more, though.

They might be able to get around this regulation because the engine is not under the front hood, so when someone hits it it can deform downwards without running into an engine block.

I think it is an OK trade off to have ugly cars with high bonnets.

Now I can run into all the pedestrians I want and no one will be hurt!

Come on, do we really need all these safety measures? Whatever happened to "active safety"- good brakes, good handling, and most importantly a good driver.

German drivers have to pass much more rigorous tests than the US. They must think this is all a bunch of...

The standards which Porsche has seemed to find a way around are from the European Union.

Except that this time it's the Europeans that came up with the pedestrian safety requirements. Most likely it's long delayed payback for the U.S. mandating park bench sized bumpers in '74.

If there were fewer airbags and such, cars would weigh less and be more efficient as a result: witness the Lotus Exige- performance and a clean environment.

On AutoLine Detroit on PBS last weekend they talked about NASCAR and Dow foam product placement. Look it up if you don't watch it already, a good program.

DaimlerChrysler engineers dropped packaging space of side impact countermeasures used in the new smart fortwo by 40% thanks to Impaxx energy absorbing (EA) foam from Dow Automotive, Auburn Hills, Mich.

Compared to other EA countermeasures such as extruded polypropylene (ePP) and injection molded plastic parts which typically weigh in at about 30 gm, Impaxx parts were half the weight with no loss in energy absorption. The EA foam also meets the internal side impact requirements of the Mercedes Car Group as well as European ECE-R 95 and US FMVSS 214 standards.

Weight and packaging space savings will help the smart fortwo get better gas mileage and give designers greater design flexibility for in-door conveniences including larger door pockets. Impaxx foam can be assembled to the door trim easily by pushing it onto a cross rib feature without need for heat stakes, tape, or adhesive.

Dow Automotive provided DaimlerChrysler engineers with comprehensive conceptual part design as well as CAD and CAE support including correlated material models and fast prototyping. Prototype parts were of production quality so last-minute design changes needed no additional tooling costs. This was key to helping DaimlerChrysler engineers meet a challenging vehicle development timeline.

Impaxx EA foam and parts are manufactured in Europe and delivered to the smart production site located in Hambach, France.

I am sure it will be nice. I just hope they keep weight the same or slightly less. Germans cars seem to be eating too much lately.

With the exception of the ugly add on camouflage, see absolutely no difference between the above car and the current 997tt/GT2. It even has the rear intercooler side vents. Which is good - too much change outdates the previous models too rapidly.

It it a possibility the author of the above article has no idea what he is talking about with photos of spy shots that are 3-4 years old?
