Still Smoking after oil change. Video

http://www.sbtraveler.tv/smoking2.html

87' 911 turbo

I followed the directions for the oil / filter change from people in this great forum and the book (101 Projects). It looked like it did have to much oil in it the first time because after warm up it was slightly over the top mark on the dip stick. But now I am sure it has what it needs. I filled 9 quarts like the book recommended to start with. After warm up it was just on the dipstick. Added the 10th qrt and now it's at 1/4 above the low line on the dip stick.

When the car started I was excited because there was no smoke. But after 3 minutes it started showing small signs of smoking and after 5 minutes it was full blow smoke again.

Did you empty both the oil tank and the sump?
If not, it's overfilled. DON'T ask me how I know.
You ARE checking the oil level correctly?

So you said at one point it did have too much oil? Might take some time to clean out all the oil that is still in your breather tube and intake.

Oh ahah- I did empty both areas by removing both drain plugs, the one for the tank and the one right under the motor. Replaced with new crush plates and correct torque 31 ft. lbs when I tightened. The oil was black. My drive was is a a slight slant down so I drove the rear tires up on a couple of 2x4 and then put a water level on a flat part to make sure the car was level. I am certain the oil lever is correct and the car warmed up 20 minutes before I checked it and reved the engine a little.

Old man neri - What I don't understand is why it doesn't start smoking right away if if there is oil left in the lines? There was no smoke for the first 3 minutes and then it start slowly and got worse from 3 to 5 minutes

Could be engine vacuum increased after 5 minutes or your thermostat opened.

Glad to hear you got the oil change done and correctly. Nice job. I'm impressed that you even put boards down to get it REALLY level.

Don't knock yourself out about the smoke. You mayneed to drive it a little whiel to get the excess out of the intake.

Whoa...don't have to worry about mosquitos around your house. It will probably burn off after a while due to the overfill.

Lars, you may want to post over in the 930 turbo section as it may be turbo/scavenger pump related.

Here is a link to a buddies 930 car that has excessive smoke on start up, yours may be related.
While I was driving, everything was fine until.....

Lars if you can drive it, run it a few miles, idelings the turbo for extended lengths will only result in more smoke, drive it or let it sit untill you can. I spoke to you a few weeks ago, you have to drive the car, period! This start and idle it will never work and do more harm than help. The fact that it did not smoke after the oil change is great, letting it adle for 5 mins. will most likely result in smoking. Get out and drive the damn thing. Let me know

Oh Ahah- Thanks! I know it is a nice car so I am trying to do it all right. I know I should not worry about it but it is a ton of smoke coming out.

robert walsh - I have not even touched the air box or the air filter. I didn't think it could cause an oil problem since it is an Air Filter? can you explain more and what I should look for in the air box? 2nd post - OK I will try to get it on the road. I can;t get tags from DMV till it passes SMOG. It won't pass smog until I fix the smoking. I wonder if DMV in CA. will give me a temporary pass for a few days to drive it on some back roads?

JMatta - Other people also mentioned it might burn off. What I can't wrap my head around is that when I start it no smoke for about 3 minutes then from 3 to 5 minutes it goes from no smoke to worrying about the neighbors calling the fire department thinking it is on fire.

cl8ton- I will post over there too. It seems like a smaller group of people (20 viewing now and 138 viewing here).

You have to replace the air filters and clean all the residue in the air box itself, I think you got it solved, new filters and run the GD thing, I'M ready to get tickets form NY to CA to do it for you, either I'm a chump or you really need some help. Geez I'd take those old tag's and run that puppy for 50 mile on my own, and although I'd love to own it, I would never "never" take it or better yet, even offer what it is really worth, because I can't afford it ,and your mom loved it. I wish you all the best.

Thanks Robert... I got liabilty insurance for it today so I can run it. It is costing me an extra $14 a month since I already have 2 cars on my policy.

I'll take it out tomorrow night and run it a little on back roads.
