Can I get some help diagnosing a few leaks (trans and engine)
I dropped my engine and trans yesterday to fix some leaks. I had a transmission leak that was pretty bad only when it got hot, and a (few?) small engine oil leak(s). The trans would drop about a cup of fluid after a long drive, the engine would seep the typical amount all the time (about a quarter size drop every few days). I think I found the transmission leaks. There was a pool of swepco in the shift coupling area, and I think its also leaking at the input shaft because there was a lot of oil in the bellhousing when I separated the transmission from the engine. The trans case is pretty dry. When I took off the clutch and flywheel it was all bone dry, but there is oil all over the top and back of the engine. See pictures below. I rebuilt the transmission about 3 years ago, and replaced the thermostat o-ring, oil pressure switch seal, and oil breather seal and rear main seal. I cannot tell if any of those are leaking again, or if it's just the oil breather hose that is original to the car. Do the pictures suggest any typical signs of typical leaks, or should I just plan on replacing all of the same seals again? Any advice would be appreciated.

The leak on the input shaft is pretty common, good news is you have the two piece later version and the seal can be replaced. Beyond that you have the normal leaks addressed in Wayne's 101 book.

Can the input shaft and shift rod seal both be replaced without taking the transmission apart? I can't remember from when I did it 3 years ago. How do you prevent these from leaking again??? I really don't want to have to drop the engine and trans every 3 years to replace these seals again.

The oil breather hose can certainly be part of the problem if it is the original.
Once everything is covered in oil it is hard to determine the source. How does the main seal look? I can't tell from the pics. I need to replace my input shaft seal as well. Interested in how to do it "right" since I just replaced it 2400 miles ago. The leak isn't major but it is enough to frustrate me.
