HID Headlight kit ofr H4 bulbs

Does anyone have any experience installing one of those HID headlight kits for H4 bulbs?

There seems to be a version with HID low beam and Halogen high beam.

Also another type that refocuses for high beam. I am contemplating installing one of the re-focusing ones which seem to be solenoid operated.

Any experience or input on this from this board?

Thanks. Dick

Do you have a pic or link of that refocusing unit?

Keep us posted, like to see it in action

I have an HID kit in my Ruf BTR and it has high and low beams, I bought the kit from Imagine Auto in Lenexa, Kansas but I think I prefer 80/100 watt H4 bulbs. The HID provide better quality light but I like the distance I get from the 80/100 bulbs on back roads and dark highways with the huge deer population here in Michigan.

Here is the link to the site that gives you and idea of what the H4 kit is like.

I hope Wayne does not mind......he does not sell HID to my knowledge. I have bought LED taillights from this company and they see to be reliable.

So you meant the normal 80/100 bulbs give you further distant compare to the real HID?

HID's are usually coupled with projector style lenses. How do they look when diffused with our old skool lenses? Got to love the "warm up" when the bulbs flash on and change color.

I put an HID kit on an older Audi that I used to have with the fluted style lens similar to an h4. It was terrible. I switched back to the plain old halogen bulbs not long after. The problem is that the arc of the HID bulb is a different shape and length of a halogen filament and it causes the beam pattern to be wacky. It produced a U shaped beam that blinded oncoming traffic, and it was very unfocused, or muddy. In my opinion it was dangerous for oncoming traffic. You really need a projector style lens to work correctly with an HID bulb.

I have 80/100w bulbs in my 911, and they put out as much or more light than the factory HID projectors on my S4.

Here's the pics of them.

This pic is of the High Beam

This is the regular beam, it is actually brighter than the high beam because the high beam is not an HID beam. The only time I use the High beam is to flash someone to move over or if there are cops near by.

I bought them on eBay but they came from Vertex Auto. They were $139 with my best offer.

IMO it may be the best money spent on an upgrade.

Matt

You replace all the old bulbs and must mount the ballist inside your hood. I had to drill a 3/4 inch hole for the wires to fit. We did a 965 at the same time and did not have to drill any holes. Mine is 6000k and his is 8000k

I installed a HID conversion recently into my 81 SC and the results are fantastic. I have far greater vision now. It was a bit of work as the kit was obviously designed for a conventional head lamp set up ie lamps in the engine bay.As the 911 has lamps out on the fenders the factory wiring had to be replaced with the special looms for the HID, washer bottlr, horns removed for access a bit of hole enlarging. My driving lights in the valance panel are now invisible as the HID seems to light right in front of the car out to the side and way down the road. I have had no flashing from on coming vehicles so they are not dazzling them. A good result. The ballast units look very similar to those pictured high beam and low beam are great. I used standard Porsche H4 lenses etc although new ones.

Off topic, but it's been my experience that using the driving/fog lights at night hurts the perceived performance of your regular headlights. By lighting up the road in front of your car so well, it hurts your night vision. I think this is why HID's are usually so focused with projectors.

Germany has some weird driving laws, and not using your fog lights unless you're actually in a low visibility situation is one of them. In one way it makes sense.

Here's a good article about converting your halogen fixtures to HID.

http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/Hid/conversions/conversions.html

This is one reason why I switched back.
