Bits in the transmission
I changed fluid today and found these bits in the transmisison.
1. Is it gears or synchros? 2. How many more miles will it last before it shifts no more? I like to drive it a little more before rebuilding it. Too many projects this year. ![]()

Dogteeth. I would advise against driving it any more until you rebuild it. You'll need to open it up to see which gears are destroyed.

So, what damage will it do if I drive it more. I mean, the damage is already done...

1st dog teeth from the angle of the teeth. there are a few more holding the syncro in place. the rest of them can break at any time and the syncro will expand and you won't be able to engage 1st. then the syncro and brake band may be caught in the works, twisted into a pretzel and broken into chunks, often taking gear teeth with them in the process. so no, don't drive it.

you can do 1st and 2nd by dropping the engine and trans as a unit and removing the end cover and intermediate housing to expose the gears. then remove the two roller bearings, remove 1st gear from the pinion shaft, remove the 1st/2nd shift fork bolt, after measuring exactly where it sits on the shaft, tap off the fork and the shift sleeve and slide off 2nd. this can all be done with the trans still bolted to the engine if you don't think the clutch needs to be looked at. a full, average/normal rebuild, trans only, can average $2K easy these days. that's trans only, no R&R.

Will you be posting pictures and details of this project?
I think it would benefit many here, including myself, to be able to follow the progress. I hope so and good luck! ![]()

Any idea how it happened? might help others avoid this issue.
