1967 & 1968 interior rear trim -- what's correct?

We have a 1968 Porsche 911 coupe, which seems a changeover year with some unique characteristics.

I've seen two types of the cap panels that go over the rear side panels (under the quarter windows). One is essentially a straight cap, and the other type has a "C" shaped end on side towards the B pillar. This type actually wraps around the B pillar with one extra screw to fasten it into the B pillar.

Which is correct? I have one of the "wrap around" style right now in my car on the driver's side and one of the simpler straighter style on the passenger side.

I actually like the wrap-around one around better style-wise and, since our car is a bit of a hot rod, I'd ideally like to find a matching wrap-around top/cap for the passenger side.

But what year & model Porsche did these come from???

Thanks in advance for your comments and sharing your knowledge.. that's what makes this Board so helpful.

Best Regards,
Andy

Here's the wrap around style:

And here's the straight style:

I'm almost 100% sure the 68 had the straight ones the wrap around came in 69...cause 69-on had the the trim panel that ran down the edge of the door. On the 65-68 the rear panel the vinyl material wraped around and was held in by the door seal...

The wrap-around one I have on my driver's side rear area is simply vinyl glued directly to the metal basis. This would argue for it being from 1967 or earlier, wouldn't it? I mean, I thought the 1968 door caps were the first time they were padded -- new federal safety regulations came out in 1968, right?

The straight one I have on the passenger side rear area is padded slightly. So maybe correct 1968 model...

So I guess I'm looking for a wrap-around from 1967 to match my existing one???

Or, if the 1969 wrap-around ones are identical but with padding, maybe I could find one of those and remove the padding to match....

It's an idea, anyway.

Andy

The laws were enacted in 1968 were for the most part to be implemented in 1969 MY cars or cars delivered after January '68. There were '68 MY cars delivered in the USA prior to January '68 that don't meet the requirements. Early '68 delivered USA cars often don't have headrests.

The difference might be early '68 cars and or 911L's verses regular 911's. The '68 911S was a ROW car only.

My early '68 912 has the non-rap-around and non padded door and rear pop-out covers.

Guys,

I think this may be an issue with USA spec vs. RoW and manufacture date before/after 1/1/68, not model year.

I have both a virgin ’67 and a virgin USA ’68 manufactured after 1/1/68 here. After it warms up a bit and I venture out, I’ll report.

Best,
Grady

Well...if 911quest stands to be corrected, I do too! (Can't trust those mid-year changes...)

Andy was asking me questions on eBay about some of my parts.

I have a few cars here so I took a couple pictures. I have not seen a 68 912 as of yet with a wrap around rear bolster. I have not seen many 68 911 cars. 68s are funny though. The first ones used 67 engine grilles - then the 68-69 one, door panels are hard to reproduce, same with dash and bolsters, lots of mixing of parts on the 68 transition year.
