'74 911 build, Iroc it out ???.....
I recently purchased a '74 Porsche 911 sunroof coupe, ex-race car. The car is very solid, runs and drives great. Although the suspension is VERY tight for the street, lol :D!
Here are the current specs: 2.7 liter CIS fuel injection (recently rebuilt maybe 30K?!) Perma-Tune CDI Hot Spark breakerless electronic ignition (like pertronix) Short shifter kit 5 Speed 915 trans Glen Sanders 23MM hollow front torsions bars Glen Sanders 31MM hollow rear torsion bars Kokeln 22 MM hollow front sway bars with through body mounts Kokeln 22 MM hollow rear sway bars with reinforced mounts Polygraphite suspension bushings Rear SC adjustable sprint plates Koni fully adjustable shocks Turbo tie rods Solid Aluminum trans and engine mounts Front RS oil cooler Euro fiberglass front spoiler Front brake cooling ducts braided stainless brake lines freshly rebuilt calipers (stock and race pads) Carrera cam chain tensioners Airbox pop off valve SCCA/PCA approved roll cage Halon fire suppression system Engine/electrical cut out switch Sparco seats (Corsa & EVO 2) Schroth 5 point harnesses RS door panels/interior Modified stock muffler Hot Lap timing system Fully polished Fuch Forged aluminum 15" wheels Brand new Falken Ziex ZE-512 radial all season performance tires Recently repainted Sikkens single stage red At this point I'm trying to decide where I want to go with it, as a track/street car I would still like to drive it every now and again. Especially since they've just built a new track just outside of Denver,CO :)! Should I...... 74 IROC 73 RSR back date Or just keep it going as-is..... It runs great, so I don't think I'll get into the stock 2.7 much (maybe later on though). I do my own bodywork, so steel flares would be fairly easy. My budget is about $10-15k, with a 2-3 year timeline. Pictures could help?! Thanks in advance!!!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229625190.jpg |
RSR/IROC with 2.7 CIS is kinda ...ehhh. Of course you could do a motor down the road. It seems like it would be really nice to be able to run 16x7,9 fuchs to get more rubber out back...or at least 15x8s. So RS/SC rear flares would be nice. I would think lt wt bumpers would be worth considering....and H4s.
I am kinda into the back date narrow hips 69 R look these days too. |
Well air dams and narrow bodies just don't mix well IMO (even the S spoiler on longhoods is less attractive than the std spoiler) so i'd definitely change something. Of course every time i push past 80 i wish i had one!
I say if the metal is good leave it narrow but ditch the sugar scoops, front dam, window sticker and rocker trim. Then scuff the wheels for a frosted finish and add glass front and rear bumpers that don't incorporate the accordians. |
Just my opinion but I wouldn't spend that much and add weight without touching the motor. If it's a solid car with really good cosmetics and the suspension is dialed in go for more motor UNLESS you are going more lightweight but and making an RSR or 911R longnose lightweight car. It seems like a nice car as-is.
Try something totally different like what would RUF have built in 1974? A narrow body lightweight. Make a 1974 Red Bird. Or what would a 2.7 911R have looked like? |
The only reason for the front spoiler was for the front brake ducts, and large oil cooler. Though I think a narrow iroc bumper would've suited this car better. Believe it or not the car also had a "tea tray" wing on it before I got it.
I totally plan on swapping out/building the motor later on down the road but, I don't see any point right now since it runs so well. Plus I don't have any receipts on the engine other than the carrera chain tensioners so selling it is out of the question. It seems 2.7's even with paperwork are a pretty hard sell these days. a ruf clone? could do, wouldn't take much work other than a bumper change either. I'm looking at this project like an "investment", it looks like professionally built 911 RS/RSR clones are hot right now. So that's kinda of what I was working towards.... |
man...sounds like you got a car thats all ready to go on the track! I say "go to the track!". However, if you want to have some street style, you have all the chrome and the right mirror to go with a 73RS/RSR. Of course, I really like the 74RSR look too which would also look good with the chrome. There is one in particular here on the board thats GP White with Black graphics thats really bad ass. Either way, you would end up with a cool looking car regardless of the engine. Its all in the attention to detail. so..in my final closing statement: I say go with the chromed 74 RSR look in Viper Green or Gemini Blue.

not a Ruf 'clone' but rather a 'what would Alois do?' statement from 1974 as mentioned.
follow the design philosophy, not the design itself. i would think that front spoiler is doing quite a bit at big track speeds but yeah, it is not the prettiest thing in the world. agree with others that a stock, even fresh, 2.7 w/ CIS isn't really RSR material. interestingly i DID meet a guy with an RS rep that had a CIS 2.7 built by some big name (might have even been Ruf?) and it was one nasty beyatch! |
Definately not a clone but make a car that looks like the fisrt RUF prototype. As an investment you would have to spend a lot more than $15K and then it would likely not be an investment. I was just thinking something new and different - something noone has done. With that motor it could be a cool backdated hot rod but updated needs more motor.

The car was for the most part a weekend PCA track car, the non-stock body parts were installed in an effort to help the car on the track.
You know, I think there's something to be said for the rev happy 2.0-2.7's. Having worked at 3R Racing I've been around quite a few RMVR and PCA vintage race 911's and some of those "early" engines can really move. I guess I'm going about this abit backwards doing the cosmetics first then the engine. But the mechanics on the car are in great shape. Actually the whole car is very solid, just don't like the look of it at the moment. I'd like to make it my own, but also something that will hold it's value in the future. In other words something that's "special", though maybe not soo obscure where no one knows what it is. |
here are a couple ways to go. One is Ruf style, the other is "mini" iroc style (with two front bumper options)
Going to the track? you would want to consider the mini iroc styles due to more downforce These are bumpers that replace the original impact absorber / safety bumpers, so realize you will lose that aspect of protection. They will reduce the weight of your car , which bodes well for increase in performance. I noticed from the pics that you have stock fender wells out back- no worries as we have a rear bumper to fit the 74-77 "narrow" rear cars that looks like our other RSR style bumpers http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229635957.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229635976.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229635992.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229636009.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229636024.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229636062.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229636075.jpg |
Wow, I really like that last yellow car. Doesn't it have rear SC flares though?
|
Quote:
Do you sell that front bumper under the stock bumper on the red car and the rear bumper and RS duct tail for an 86 Carrera? What's the link to the site? How much? |
yes it does have SC flares- i don't have pics of the narrow rear bumper installed, but the contours are identical, just smaller on each end by the wheel openings
|
Does anyone have a pic of the iroc style bumpers on a narrow body car? I know the car would look alot cleaner with the "crash" bumpers taken off. But if I ever get in a crash I might regret that, even with the PCA approved cage.
I don't know if I like the post '74 cars without flares?......... |
sure- here ya go- this is a better angle

The front is alright but, it's hard on the rear because of the SC flares. Still trying to envision those bumpers on a narrow body......and if I go through all the trouble of putting fender flares on I might as well put on the turbo flares.

If it were mine, I would mostly leave it alone. I would add some H4 head lights, a factory style sport muffler, paint the webs on the Fuchs black, put some Toyo RA1 or R888's competition tires on it. Then I would spend my money on driving lesions and track fees.
The narrow body cars with there light weight drive train and low rear diff with sticky tires and a good driver can be pretty darn fast and embarrass a lot of the bigger cars. Maybe, maybe I would later try fiberglass IROC SC bumpers, with riveted on fiber rear flairs painted white, yellow, or some other contrasting color. Put some long studs and spacers to run some 993 Cup rims which only cost about $600 a set with 225/255/17's Toyo or Nitto race tires. Big flairs and heavy rims will just slow that thing down. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...leys/pint1.gif |
PS, 7x15 Cookie cutter rims with 205/50/15 BFG R1's, Hoosiers, or Toyo RA1 225/50/15's are very hard to beat. Rims are only about $300 a set. Then leave the body alone and paint the cookie cutters yellow or white for a stunner.
Oh, and Minilite syle rims are over the top on a narrow body. http://www.vtoperformance.com/acatalog/Superlite_GTR.html |
Had a set of 205 front, 225 rear Kumho Victoracer V700. The 225/50/15s were a tight fit in the rear with the lowered suspension. The rear fender lip ate the sidewall up a little. I'll have to raise the car slightly and or roll the inner edge of the rear fenders next time.
I will probably get a set of new Hoosiers mounted on the Fuch 15's. Then get some Linea Fox wheels for the street during the summer. |
I saw this car on the Denver Craigs List. great that a Pelican scored it. If it ever warms up around here, I expect to be able to check it out in person at Coffee + Cars!:)
