MFI Pump oil leak

I have a 72T that has a bad oil leak. It leaves about a 1/2 pint every time it sits for a couple of days. I thought it was the MFI cam seal, but it turned out to be higher up and now I think it is the MFI pump.

Is the rubber plug on the back side a breather? Oil appears to be running out of it.
Are there other places on the pump that have problem with oil leaks? I did a MFI pump oil leak search and found zip.
Thanks

All you need to do is replace the old rubber cap with a new one from your favorite pump rebuilder.

As for other areas;

side cover gaskets and/or side covers warped.
bottom plate gasket bad
rear cover gasket and/or rear cover warped.
solinoid gaskets
Loose cheese head screws.
Shaft seal worn

I suspect that I have the same issue. Is that cap the only thing holding back the oil flow at that point, or is it a secondary catch for seepage? I seem to be pumping quite a lot through that area.

Thanks Aaron,

Damm, I dropped the engine for a rubber cap! I don't have a favorite pump rebuilder, do you?

I work at Supertec so that is my favorite We may have one in stock.

Since you pulled the motor, now is a great time to take advantage of any other potential areas for leaks.

The vent cover gasket and the cooler O rings are a couple of quick ones you can do.

Yes, The rack is behind there and there is no other seals to prevent leaks.

If that cap was bad, would it let out about a 1/2 pint if you let it sit a few days?

Thanks

I would definitely check for more leaks as the rack is positioned higher than the oil return hose and should not leak a great deal after the engine is off. But the amount you have measured may be residual that has traveled from the pump, to the floor while the engine was in opperation.

F.Y.I. The previous owner told me he never had an oil leak until he switched from dino oil to a high mileage synthetic.

That darn bottom plate gets my vote for "most likely to leak". It would be worth your while to replace its rubber seal as long as you have the motor out and have pretty easy access. The pump holds just a wee bit more than a half a pint, so if it is losing that much, it is worth a look.
