Trip to Fayetteville, NC to see my son

Hey guys and gals. After 15 months in Iraq, my son is coming home(Monday morning). I'm gonna give him a couple of days to square away and then I'm driving over to see him. Leaving out early Thursday morning. It's about 715 miles one way so a pretty good trip. I have checked the weather and it looks pretty good(nice thing since I have headers and no heat) Anyway the proposed route is from Savannah, Tn to Birmingham over to Atlanta and then up to Fayetteville. Going out there is gonna be pretty straight forward..Just get there asap but coming back I might have to indulge in some of the well paved and curvy roads between there and here!!
GI Porsche, are you still posted at Bragg??
Maybe someone will have a get together or a drive Saturday somewhere close by. Also I wouldn't mind if I could get some emergency numbers(In case I have an adventure like Shane!!!) from some fellow Pelicans along the route.
I'm looking forward to seeing my son again and thought it would be a blast to see some sights around Fayetteville in my old '69.
Thanks, David

Hey David - sounds like a fantastic drive! If you need anything while in the Birmingham, AL area, I can help hook you up. I'd be useless myself to lend a hand, but I can hook you up with a good garage that specializes in older Porsches should you need one - Eurasian Auto Repair. I'll be happy to PM you their contact info and mine - just in case. THANKS TO YOUR SON for his service on our behalf! Hope you have a great trip! Kathy

Thanks Kathy!! Yep, I'm looking forward to seeing my son...a little apprehensive about the long drive with no heat.. but mostly mild temps for my trip days. Changed the oil and filter and cleaned my air filters (watershed) today. I drive out to Eureka Springs, Ark every year for Palooza and it's about 435 miles one way.. I have also froze my a$$ off too
Please send info, it will be greatly appreciated and hopefully unneeded

Give your son a pat on the back from me! Thank goodness my retirement says I will not have to go back over there ( unless something really big goes on and they re-uptake me).

Hey David

Yea I'm still stationed here. Happy to hear about your son, I know I was glad to return from my 2 trips to the sand box. I just started my leave from work, but I'm staying here for xmas. I finnaly got my 911 so I''ve been doing a little bit here and there on it. Anyhow, yeah we should get together. I'm gonna try and get my 911 street ready by the end of the week. my phone # is (910) 728-5134 in case your 69 comes close to Bragg and decides to take a break. I have acces to a flat bed car trailer in case I need to pick you up.

Will do!! He shouldn't have to go back for two years but now my other son(his twin) is trying to get back in. He had just gotten out of the Guard about 7 months ago and is now talking to a recruiter in Tyler, Tx. I am very proud of them both. They like to keep me nervous though...Come to think of it they always have

Good deal!! I will give you a call when I get settled in....Josh is gonna have to take me out to dinner for my birthday even though he doesn't know it yet!! The little car has been pretty much bulletproof. The 2.0 T motor ain't got a lot of power but boy is it solid...Saying all that I sure hope I don't have to call you for that roll back..you know "Murphy's Law"

Sounds like a good time. My 81 ROW is still smoking a lot, I was surprised at how the oil looked when I changed it. Nonetheless I took it out in the neighborhood and it pulls nice and strong. Though I think my deceleration valve is bad, when I let go of the gas and the rpms drop fast it dies on me. Just my thought, but I might need a replacement. Anyways, hope your trip goes without a glitch.

Thanks Jeff. I'm hoping to hit Hotlanta at about 75mph and hopefully after rush hour. I think about 9:00 in the AM maybe 10:00. It all depends on my stomach and how hard it's growling!! If you don't mind I'll drop you an email for more info!

Just a thought, but they make seat covers that have massage and heat built into them and plug into your cig. lighter. Might be a thought for keeping you warm. They are cheep and tacky looking but for long questionable road trips might be something worth looking into.
Tell your son Thank You from my family. My Daughter comes home Friday, she is an Army MP.

10:00am will still be in alot of traffic. Whats your route? Have you considered cutting across Hwy 20 or such?

I looked at several different routes but decided that on the trip out I would just keep it simple. I've gone to Ft Jackson several times and it is about the most efficent way to get to South Carolina. It is a pretty straight shot up to Fayetteville from there. I know the traffic is still pretty heavy at 10:00 but nothing like 8:00. I will go straight through and with a passenger I can take the ROV lane.. That's usually pretty quick unless somebody decides to read someone else's tag...up close and personal!!
I'm gonna explore coming back...Maybe go over to Knoxville and catch some of the twisties.........Of course I may be just plum wore out and just go HOME.
