Electric to roll up window conversion.

What do I need to convert my windows to manual roll up.

I have found a set of 74 doors to take the parts off of. My car is an 85.

Is it just the door handle and what it attaches to or is it more involved?

new interior panel or covering as the switch holes will be there

Window lift mechanism and window channels are the big part.
The early channels can be used on your late glass.
No need on the outer handles.

I am not familiar with the inside of the doors and have not clue what I am talking about.

Again, donor is a 74 for my 85.

Is this the wrong year to be looking at for the needed parts?

What is a "regulator"?

Do I need everything from the winder handle to the lift mechanism that looks like a big seizers?

Do I need what attaches to the bottom of the window (assuming there is such a thing)?

Are you saying I need the frame the window goes up an down in to?

Any pictures of what any of this stuff looks like?

Ok, I found the following parts diagram looks like all I may need is the regulator.

I do not know if there is a differance between 75 and 85?

Also do not know if this can be done buy just taking off the door covering and rasing the window?

Any idea how much the motor weighs by its self?

#14 & #16 in diagram is commonly called regulator which porsche calls "electric lifter".

Both flavors of the old regulators had a weak pin in the center of the spring. Upgrade pin costs more that it looks. Old pins break.

The channel is attached by measuring distance from glass edge if you flip glass. Otherwise I guess you can use your 1985 channel?

I'd get new "seal"s if you do. I'd also check condition of glass long rubber rain wipers.

raise glass about 1/3 up and whole 9yards can be disconnected. Note where bolts lay if you see there is an adjustment to it.

the frame & glass is adjustable.

weight of motor is close to a 2# diving weight

It looks like "late style doors" are 74-89. I should be ok with parts from a 74.

It appears that new window regulators are available and that there has been several style changes through out the years. New regulators are about $150 each. With changes in styles the "channel" that I think is what the end of the regulator rides in and where attached to the bottom of the window has to be right.

By going into Pelecan parts and entering "window regulator" one can access some good info by clicking on the part picture.

This can get a bit complicated as some re-drilling may be required.

There is a "parallel" and "cross" style arm sets. The newer style is a cross style arm.

When looking up the window regulator as noted above make sure you see the "Technical Bulletin No. 7"

The new style also appears to need a new guide to be installed.

I replaced a regulator in my old targa (failed manual regulator) and the job was a real PITA. There are two tough parts: 1. getting the regulators in and out of the door (the opening is just small enough to turn it into a puzzle), 2. getting the glass in the perfect spot on the mount (too far front or back means it won't roll up or down smoothly). Also, when I did this job the replacement part was the later style "X" regulator which required the drilling of a new hole in the door. Good luck with the project!
