Bits in the transmission, the final chapter
120 miles later, whatever noise that was in the 915 tranny after the rebuild I just did has disappeared. The tiny little interference probably no longer inteferes (euphemism for grinding itself off). The only noises remaining is throw-out bearing / pilot bearing. It was bad karma for me to not change them while I changed the clutch. I know, I know ... So I am happy to leave it alone until the next annual regimen of droppinig the engine next Christmas.
As to why the syncro hub teeth broke. I have driven sticks for 24 years from Toyota to Italian exotics. I have learned to double-clutch 20 years ago and I have done that ever since, so the synchro rings are all good when they come out of the 915 this time. Did not look like they were worn down at all. I do drive fast, drive hard and shift even harder. It is a habit I have picked up from my BMWs, my Toyotas, my Acuras, and I carried it forward to my Ferrari and my Porsche 911. The 915 gear box (this is my 3rd) has always had problems with the way I drive. If I had just feathered the 915 in 1st and 2nd, not ham-fisting it in when it does not want to go in, then I guess the 915 will live longer. Summary, the 915 and I are not best of friends and we have not learned to be better friends yet. We may never be. Until the next engine drop ...
