993 engine deal - what to do?

Hi,
I could get a pretty good deal on a 993 engine (1995 Euro non-vario). The engine is running. It has 150,000 km with good compression and according to the mech taking care of the car, has no major issues other than some oil leaks from the valve covers.

I have been thinking for a long time in buying an engine for a rebuild project.

My question is what would you do? ...and what would be the investment associated with it?

I was thinking about building a 3.8, but I was a little bit discourage but some posts I read on the forums questioning it.

If, not this what engine would you choose as the perfect candidate to build a strong engine. Currently I have a 993 Euro Varioram on my car.

Look forward for crazy ideas.

If it is a good deal, buy it. I have the same engine in my garage waiting to be matched up with the car (a euro SC). Worst case scenario, you can clean it up, fix the leaky issues and sell it.

Cheers,

Mike

The only downside of a 3.8 is the cost for the 109mm base p/c set(I wouldn't use the slip fit versions)

You already have one engine do you need another, or a project?

Not sure what you mean by a pretty good deal? How much $$ are you talking, we're still talking 80K miles on a 993, low miles for some problematic for others. What the price of the good deal?

Not sure building a 3.8 is a good idea unless you really know what you are doing. Recommend you read Steve Timmon's write up on the 3.8 www.instant-g.com where he clearly shows that its a lot of money for a small power gain.
