Interchangeability of DME brains: '86 to '88
Will an '86 911 DME brain work in an '88 911? Both cars are non turbo. I do know that the '86 did not need the jumper connection modification to work with a custom chip.

Both are likely 28 pin DME's and should be interchangable.

Yes they are interchangable. The idle speed is slightly different so you might want to readjust the idle speed to match the "new" DME.

Can you plug in a complete later box with a 28 pin chip in it, into an 85 (24 pin) wire harness and have it work or dose the wire harness also have to be changed. Or, what else to update.

It's my understanding that all '84 - '89 DME's are interchangable. There are slight differences between them but an '84 DME will work with an '89 engine, and vice verse.
