911 seat recliner repair
Hi,
I have a 73.5 911T and recently bought a set of stock seats (not sports) for it. The seat recliners are black painted as original but need to be repainted. I have them off and would like to get them powder coated, however in order to take them apart I need to remove the plastic cover over the inside spring. On one side of the cover it snaps free but on the opposite side it looks like it may be glued to a metal strip. Does anyone have any ideas on how to release this side of the plastic cover and remove it? Tia otto btw the recliners that I am talking about are the same as the chrome ones on earlier 911s and 356s. |

Hi Otto,
That's a tough one. That plastic cover is evil. It is made of a material which does not age well. I had the same problem and finally just broke it loose as best I could. Once I got it out, I tried to clean it but it was not possible. Short of creating a vacuum mold to recreate the piece, I don't think there's any way it can be made to look good. Please keep us up to date on your progress or lack of it. Good Luck. Jerry Weiland

For what its worth the cover is not glued but is held to the recliner by two triangular pins that wedge into two round holes on the surface. By gently prying with a screw driver I was able to release the cover and only broke two of the pins which can repaired with glue.

I assume that you plan to totally dismantle the assembly for powder coating. Its the only way to do it correctly. I powder coat my own parts, and its not practical to leave it assembled.
If so, you will be a spring compressor. If you go this route, I fabricated a compressor for reinstalling the springs. If you need the compressor, I'm sure that we could work something out. Cheers Jon |
