cruise control delete?
I'm in the middle of a 3.6 transplant on my 82 sc and was wondering if i could simply just unplug the cruise control module and servo unit and leave every thing else alone? or does the control unit in the trunk also feed / complete some other curcuit? Thanks

nah...unplug, tape it up, and zip it out of the way.

I did a 3.6 transplant to my '80 SC back in '92, when not many had been done. Had to learn by doing, as there was little info out there about the process. When I got to the cruise control ,I thought it would be nice to still have it available. With a little homemade engineering I made it work, and am glad I did! Give it some thought, it can be done. Its just a matter of improvising some linkage.
One ouestion, I've seen several sets of instructions since on how to do this swap, but none mentioned the lack of the engine mounted oil cooler on the 3.6. When I did my swap, I was concerned about oil temp even though I had the fender mounted cooler. So i went ahead and drilled out the undrilled oil galleries on the 3.6 block, and retrofitted an early oil cooler. It was a snap. Just wondering if you thought of it? Sure makes for a nice cool running engine! Back when I did my swap, there were no shortened bellhousing G50s around, so I went with a new 915 LSD and HD clutch. (sold the G50 for a giveaway price DUH). The only thing I could do for the exhaust at the time, was to junk the complete 3.6 system and install a SC system (as I recall, there was some problem with the heat ex flanges and exhaust port studs, but I can remember what! Getting old I guess LOL). To sum this up, you will love this swap, my car is a ROCKET!! Grant |

thanks for the heads up on the cruise control. With that said, I still will probably delete the unit. I'm trying to make it as lite as possible. I I can't imagine doing this job with the modern day "kits" that are out there. I went with Steve Timmons kit from Instant-G. So far is going very well and i'm learning a ton! & Steve has been very helpful. I'm very glad I took this on myself, just can't wait to finish. As far as the muffler goes, I think I will go the route of building a system from scratch buying all the loose parts and pieces.

Darryl,
Did the kit you used do anything about retrofitting an oil cooler? If you used a kit you probably were able to use a G50 trans, right? Sure wish I'd had some expert help when I attempted it 16 yrs ago, but there's some satisfaction in being a "pioneer". So glad to see you're doing this job yourself. There's lots of guys out there with gobs of bucks who can pay for this type of thing, but they will never experience the thrill of turning that key the first time and hearing that 3.6 roar to life, and thinking "I did that". It's worth all the skinned knuckles and occasional frustrations! Good luck!! Regards, Grant |

Darryl,
Went to InstantG site and looked things over, wish I'd had that resource! I saw no mention of retrofitting to engine oil cooler, but I sure wonder why. They mention adding a second cooler in the left fender, but that's big bucks. You can just obtain a good used 911 engine cooler, drill out the existing two oil gallery holes in the case, obtain the two needed gallery rubber grommets, install 4 short studs to the existing holes in the block, and bolt her on. Viola, you now have your addl cooler, and you can use your original oil pipe, instead of the welded up one from the kit. I'll attach some pics I've edited from http://www.rennlight.com/howto/964/index.html I would imagine you already know about that site. Some good light weight info there! ![]() ![]() This retro seemed like a no brainer to me when I did my 3.6 15yrs ago. Anybody have any comments posite or negitive, lets hear them. Grant |
