I am installing a set of collapsable oil return tubes in the '77.
The tubes came with no instructions. They have green rubber O rings, pretty clear how these go together. But they also have metal snap rings. These are a full circle, but have a split so they can be expanded. I can't figure out what to do with these or where they go. Each goes on the smaller diameter half of the tube just adjacent to the larger diameter half to keep the tubes from working their way loose during the normal contraction and expansion cycles of the engine.

make sure you use DOW 111 silicone paste as a lubricant or you will never get the green seals to slip in, or even telescope. the red seals are easier to use if you can find them.

You can put a hose clamp on the tubes temporarily to pry against, protecting the tubes.

The hose clamp trick works like a charm.
I didn't have any 111, and a previous attempt to find someplace that sells it left me dry. So I used oil. Worked okay with the green seals, at least in combination with the clamps. Now I will see what other oil leaks I have. I just replaced the valve cover gaskets which were the primary culprit, and the oil tubes leaked a bit too. I think I have some oil seeping out at the base of a cylinder where it meets the case. Far as I know, there is no gasket or sealent here. Short of taking the engine apart how might I deal with this? It also seems I have some seepage where the case meets the cam tensioner hosing. I will know better where the remaining leaks are shortly. ------------------ Chuck Moreland - '86 Cab, '77 Targa, Family Truckster |
