Switching oil weight Question
I have been running Mobile 1 synthetic 5W-50 weight. Is it ok to switch to Mobile 1 synthetic 10W-30? I live in sunny San Diego CA. I am contemplating the switch because COSTCO sells 10W-30 pretty cheap.
Thanks! |

Does your owner's manual include 10W30 as a recomended weight for your climate? Also, if you have an older car, there are other considerations besides weight. The new SM oils commonly available are not not good for older engines. Read this Oil Thread. While I know the thread is very long, it is worth reading to get a sense of the issues you may be facing.

JMHO, but a 10w-30 anything is too light for your climate in an air-cooled engine.
I'd be using a 15w-40 or 15w-50.

I'd stick with XW-50 in whatever brand oil you use since it's not limited by the EPA on how much ZDDP it can contain.

You need the higher weight for ZDDP and viscosity.

After you read the oil thread (above), you will realize that the curent crop of SM oils present a risk to you car. If it was me, I would stick with what you are using or switch to SWEPCO 15W-40 or Brad Penn 20W-50.

Oil is not the place to be saving money on an air-cooled engine.

30 is not a good "number"...

Early Porsche has the right answer. The 10-30 version of Mobil 1 has insufficient ZDDP in it. The 15-50 version has just enough. Don't know about the 5-50 or any other wt.
