Question Should have instaled that pop-off valve thats sitting on my workbench

Hey All, So this morning I went to move the car into the garage. It was about 10 degrees and going to snow. As I started it BOOM! Now It wont start at all. I'm sure I blew up the air-box but I'm not certain. My questions are... what should I do? And what parts am I going to need to fix it also Is this a job I can do myself. Thanks for your help. Jake

Seymore,
Yes you can do it yourself if you have some mechanical skills. I did this recently without dropping the motor, tricky yes but do-able, worst part was getting the screws back in which hold the cold start valve to the back of the air box. See this post for some details, I have a list of parts needed as well somewhere will find and post for you.

Seymore,
I feel your pain as I blew mine after doing a drop & trans rebuild. Davy is correct, it can be done without an engine drop, but I was so frustrated that I had it flatbedded away & paid to have it done. Just be ready for some serious contortions.
Oh, I did have a pop off valve when it blew. Also had one installed in the new airbox as an extra precaution.

Check to be sure the rubber boot from the air flow sensor to the throttle body hasn't just blown off on one end. Before I installed the pop-up valve, on several occasions when backfiring my '74 CIS blew the boot off of the throttle body..

Maybe you are lucky and this is the problem ??

if you have to replace the box do a partial engine drop. it's well worth it.

Agreed. One of my master mechanics tried (just for the heck of it) to do an airbox on a late SC with the engine in the car. He owned every tool ever made for P-cars, and when he was done, and his arms stopped bleeding, he proclaimed something like, "Well, that was about the dumbest thing that I've ever done!"

Take the engine out and do it right.

How hard is it to drop an engine? I dont know if im up for that. I can do a little engine work but that sounds tricky. Do you just undo the motor mounts with jack stands under the motor and jack up the car?

I've removed and installed CIS without a drop, and it is not bad. A partial drop will provide more access. You only have to drop a few inches to make a big difference.

I would recommend taking the entire CIS out and then replace the box on a bench. Removing the entire "spider" is not difficult, but if you try to replace just the box while the system in on the engine....good luck to you.

Removing the CIS - start with the top boot and all connections. If you have AC and Heat, you'll want to remove those. Bag and tag everything if you are not familiar with the CIS. Study all the pictures and diagrams you can find so you have a mental picture of what you can't easily see while removing the system.

The only special tool you'll need is a 13mm socket with the universal joint on it. I purchased a 1/4 and 3/8 inch drive version from Sears to use with extensions I had in my tool box.

A partial drop will work, but I don't do it that way because of the heavy strain on my back. I guess if I was twenty-something it wouldn't be bad, but I'll never see twenty (or forty!) again!

Use the search button for both engine partial drop, and engine removal, I'm sure that you will find plenty of info.

Excellent reference! There will be some differences on the '82 (breather hoses, frequency valve and harness are a couple), but iceman's approach and organization are terrific. By the way, his car turned out great and runs well.

Removed mine last weekends in 45 mins, no drop. Remove the air boot and the cruise bracket and you have just about the same amount of room as a partial drop for a fraction of the time,

Actually, out is probably more difficult as you should be more familiar with what goes where during install. The hardest part is the inner runner nuts on the #5 and #6 cylinder. With the universal jointed 13 mm socket, it's not bad. Use a long 1/4 extension...you should leave the AAR off during installation. It'll give you more room to work on the runner nuts. Leaving the WUR off will also help.

It's really not difficult at all guess. I can think of a few other tasks more frustrating than install CIS on the engine w/o a drop.

Well it seems about 50/50 on droping the motor or not. So I think I might get what info I can and just see for myself how hard it is. If worst comes to worst Ill drag it into the shop and pay someone else to do it. Thanks for all the info everyone. Oh 1 more question does anyone have a parts list of what im going to need. Thanks again.

If I remember correctly the iceman (see John D's link in post #10) has all of the parts he used included in his story...

You may be missing the point of a "partial drop." You only lower the motor with the axles and trans mounts in place. You can gain several inches of working room on top by removing 2 bolts. If unclear about this, don't do it.

Uh oh maybe I should install a pop off valve on my 82 SC. Probably right after I install the hydraulic chain tensioner, and right after I change over the Dilivar studs.

Or maybe I'll just sell it as the only unmolested SC Targa left in the world.
