Side Mirror Swivels 85 Targa 911

What keeps the side mirror's from folding in when driving.

My mirror was hit and now it's very lose. I can pull it off and on at the base knob.

Is this even fixable. It looks like there are a set of teeth in the upper housing. They might have been stripped when the mirror was hit.

Any ideas??

Can aslo be the spring- there is a rod/bolt between base and head of the mirror with a spring around it. petrhaps the spring broke.

You may need to completely remove the mirror, undo the wiring etc and thread the screw portion of the tube into the nut. I removed the plastic bushing I believe when I didn't have quite enough thread to grip it any longer

On my 85 the aluminum threads on the mirror base stripped out. To many years of folding them in and out I guess. Anyway that spring (#18 in the diagram above) is strong enough to use as coil overs for a truck. Well, maybe I exaggerate a tiny bit. It is STOUT however.

If you have VERY strong hands and arms it will compress a bit and you can tighten it up.

This is the base of the bolt you will have to turn.

This a holder I made from a flat piece of steel. That way I could put it in my vice.

I took these photos to show how I put it back together. I had to buy a new mirror from a junk yard. All I needed was the part mounted to the flat metal part. It is the part that screws onto the back of the flag (6a in drawing) I had to have a body shop paint it to match.

I used a Torx bit but so I could push straight down.

Good luck. It is a strength test. If you know a local gorilla that hires out or someone with strong hands invite them over and have them help.
