plating pedal cluster parts
Any reason not to plate the pedal stalks and "cup" in the pedal cluster?
Mine were painted black, but it seems like plating would last longer and be less likely to rust again... Thoughts? |

I had my pedal cluster rebuilt and plated by a fellow on the 914world board.

Tim:
I have an older pedal cluster stored away somewhere; other than the 2 piece clutch pedal, is there any difference between the later one piece? Can you use it in a later car (3.2)? jp |

I'm going to be rebuilding my pedal cluster in the next couple of months. I plan to yellow zinc plate it and then clear powder coat over that for added protection.

The purpose of plating should be for structural metal corrosion protection and not ‘bling’. If plated, I would want to see the parts over-painted as original.
‘nuff said. Best, Grady

Hydrogen embrittlement of plated parts comes to mind. Not sure of the forces generated onto the brake pedal, but I'd look into the consequences of this process. Original structure strength can be retained by correct heat treatment.

Less brakes, more gas!

I would not worry about the embrittlement in this case. Loads are not big even if you are standing on the brakes. Springs might fail, but unlikely IMHO. Susp. gear is another story entirely.

Pedal cluster is an ideal application for POR15.
