Bad fan shroud casting?

Has anyone seen fan shrouds cracked? I pulled mine out and turns out it had cracks throughout. I'm not sure it can be welded due to the extent of damage and pockets of bad aluminum in the casting. FACTORY DEFECT? I wonder if Porsche would send me a new one since it looks like bad craftsmanship? Has anyone made repairs to them with Belzona? Looks like I need to fine a replacement.

That looks terrible. I hope I never have that problem.

Trying to weld it may be an option but if it was me I would try and find a good second hand one or brand new if you can afford it.

Even after a successful repair the whole assembly has to be 100% straight and true because of the small clearance of the fan to the shroud. And not to mention future reliability. Looking at the damage there must have been a lot of strain from the fan belt to cause this. Like it was too tight maybe. Or the bearings for the alternator are worn which placed an extra load of the shroud.

It would be nice if Porsche would give you a new one for free but I doubt they would do that. You could also make a good argument for a free replacement for the 2.7 magnesium case (pulled studs etc) ... But that ain't going to happen!

I have read here that this is a common failure. Our host has new ones at $762.50. Expensive but at least they're available.

yeah, good luck on porsche warrantying it. it's magnesium, so it takes some skill to weld it, and it can warp and cause the fan blades to rub, kind of like it does now. post on the 911 parts forum here for a good one. make sure it's the same year range as yours, because they come in different depths where the alternator sits.

Made repair using the strongest polymer repair availible, Belzona. I'll keep an eye on it till I find a donor shroud.

OK I'll bite. I looked at the Belzona website and there was a plethora of products. Which specific one did you use and tell us a bit about how it applies, machines, etc.

I used 1111 for years in the military especially for emergency repairs, however they turn out to be permanent repairs. Very expensive stuff and will not shape using sandpaper you must use a die grinder or dremel works for small stuff.

I used JB as a temporary fix 3 years ago. It is still going strong. This stuff sounds even better.
