Question Euro H4 trim ring trouble

Hey Guys, I received my euro headlights and paintable trimm rings. I had the impression (after seeing this on another 911) that the trim rings slid over the chrome rings and snapped into place. After recieving my trim rings, I noticed that I have to remove the chrome ring from the H4 and replace it with the painted one. These paintable trim rings have the little holes at 12 and 9 o'clock. I bought them from the dealer, does this sound normal? The reason I ask is because I don't remember seeing other 911's with the little holes on their trim rings.
Thanks

Mike

The painted ones slip over a black plastic surround which is thinner than the chrome metal. They should not slip on the chrome ones.

Thanks for the reply Bill, but I don't have a thin black surround. If I remove the chrome I will be holding the lens. I saw a 911 with painted rings being removed to expose the chrome.

per Mark Haabs Authenticity book;
"Trim rings for H-1 & H-4 headlights were always chrome. Painted rings were optional and actually fit right over the chrome rings"

Hope that helps. I believe some aftermarket ones may differ.

Mike,

I think you have the wrong parts. The H4's should have an integrated chrome bezel which has two screws for adjustment of the headlight beam. The correct paintable trim rings have NO holes in them. They slip overtop the integrated chrome ring on the H4. Don't forget the special pair of "screw within a screws" for the bottom of each trim ring. This allows you to screw the H4 into place (1st screw with threads within it) and then screw the painted trim ring into the H4 retainer screws.

Hope this makes sense.
Good Luck.
Nick.

"These paintable trim rings have the little holes at 12 and 9 o'clock. "

. . .I'm guessing you have the trim rings for H-5's

You've got the "inner" ring that you should be covering. The outer ring only has one hole in the 6 o'clock position. The outer snaps over and is held by the screw within a screw deal mentioned earlier.

Thanks guys, I ordered the paintable trim rings for a 1987 911. I guess maybe I should have ordered trim rings for euro lights? Does anyone have the part # for the proper rings and screw-within-screw?
Thanks again

Mike

There must be different designs then. I currently have 2 sets in my garage, one is the oem on my 76 Carrera 3, they have painted rings which when removed reveal a black plastic structure. The other set has been sitting on a shelfe in muy cagage for the past 20yrs it has chrome surround where the black plastic surround is on the Carrera.
i tried the painted ring on one of the chrome ones, it will not slip on properly. here is a pic as you can see there are no visable sdjustment holes with the ring in place.

Part #'s:

H4 primered trim ring: 0.305.500.000

Large special screw for H4: 0.305.500.001

Small special screw (fits in large special screw to hold trim ring on): 0.305.500.002

I saw listed trim rings with holes in them for adjustment. They were listed with the H5's.

Good Luck.
Nick.

Hello

All the headlightsrings up to 1980 had been chromed. Porsche then changed to "black chrome" by using silver. This was made to save money on the polishing. But chromed where still made for the old cars.

The trim rings have very small holes in the backside somtimes looking like triangles.

Those have machining purposes.

Nickshu, those part #'s must be Bosch, right? The nearest Bosch dealer said they are discontinued. My local Porsche dealer needs to know the Porsche part #. Anyone?
Thanks again!

Cool

Sorry Mike...all I had were the Bosch #'s on the boxes from when I put mine in. I looked on my parts microfiche, but they are too old and do not have H4's on them. Try calling a dealer and pretend you want to buy a set thru them. Ask for prices and then ask for the part #'s so that after you "think about it" you can just give them the #'s so they don't have to look it up again. Works for me when I need #'s.

Good Luck.
Nick.

The new H4's I bought from Europroducts had the paintable trim rings with the adjusting screws in them like Mike's. I had them painted and installed the lights. They don't slip over any other retainers, however they do have the screw at the bottom with internal threads (to attach another trim ring?). I think they look great just as they are.
