I can hold a sheet of paper up to the screen, and the housing does not deviate from the straight paper edge.... so no, doesn't look bent if one ignores the optical illusion thing.
You could cut a couple V-notches in the end of a few 1' long 2x4's, clamp them to something, lay the strut housing in them, get out a dial indicator, and spin the strut housing around. That will give you a definitive answer. The third answer is if it isn't bent more than a mm or two, why would it matter? As long as the shock fits & works and you can align the car, it ought to be OK. Why is the metal by the spindle so shiny?

yes looks bent to me looks as if the spindle casing or housing has moved on the strut. but hard to tell from a pic. you can do some basic measurements tip of spindle to lower tip of strut and compare to other side. not precision but may get you started.
good luck ed

That is why I was asking the question in the first place. I know my bent strut on my car looks like this one, but only after hitting the construction pylon at speed... Here is a picture of the stock one on my car for reference... ![]()

Thanks Ed... have you started to defrost up there yet? Anything new on your struts?

the real query may be not if the housing is bent, but is the cast metal spindle gizmo at an inappropriate angle to the housing...

I think I see what you are saying RWebb... I think someone told me in another thread something about an 11 degree measurement?

Shane, is the first photo one of the "new" replacement struts? Or is it your damaged one off of the car? If it is the replacement one, it appears that it is showing even more exposed metal than your old one. Good luck with it!! Tony.

Hey Tony,
Yeah that first one is the pax side of the replacement set I purchased. The driver's side seems to be OK. The guy I bought them from is decent and there are no issues. I just wanted to make sure I was seeing what I thought I was seeing... Trying to decide whether to mix the set (this one is from a Carrera) or stay with 2 from the same year car. I am thinking at this point that technically it won't matter.
