Oil in the intake.

Found some oil residue in the intake manifold - about a spoon full.
I read before where some oil could be sucked in thru the intake system via the oil tank breather - or possible evidence of an overfill perhaps by a PO?. I mopped up most of it and intend on cleaning the inside w/o going too nuts.

I reckon I'll have some more oil in the MAF?

Thought a pic might be interesting.

Take care,

Nobody replies in 4 hours? What the hey people?

That oil in the intake is pretty common Dan. It's typically a result of two things; overfilling the oil tank after an oil change, or checking the oil when the engine is cold (or not running at all) and filling with oil to read at the high mark on the dipstick.

I typically fill the car with about 7 or 8 quarts and fire up the engine. Once it warms up to normal operating temp after a short drive, then you can add the necessary amount of oil to the tank so that the dipstick reads 1/2 way between the two marks.

The orange things in the intake ports are the valve guides. Looks like the port you're showing us has a little bit of leakage. See the oil residue beneath the guide that goes all the way down the port? How does your spark plug look in that cylinder- is it clean and dry or oily black? A good indications of valve guide problems are oil consumption (excessive), fouled plugs (oily) and combustion chamber buildup in the exhaust ports. Unfortunately to look at the exhaust ports you've got to pull off the exhaust system from the heads. Not recommended unless you absolutely have to, because you must make sure you either cut the nuts off or heat the nuts cherry red with oxy-acetylene or you risk breaking the exhaust studs.

Thanks Kevin,

the 4 hrs doesn't bother me - I was out and the answers are always worth waiting for anyway. On the valve guide and leakage, I thought as much - she is 20 something, but I don't think I have issue yet on t he consumption.

Thanks much for the help - I am slowly making my way toward replacing the fuel lines and the ignition lines and other stuff while I am in there - and of course the plugs, which I will surely check out.

Thanks again!!
