935 - Not a Replica, blah blah blah...

Yeah right:

http://www.kruse.com/vehicles/detail.asp?auc_code=mohomes08&consign=423&YEAR_BEGIN=&YEAR_END=&MAKE=Porsche&MODEL=&SEARCH_NAME=Porsche&PAGE=1

So what, this car is a body panel fit test car? I don't get this thing at all.

Quote:
This 911 SC/935 Porsche was originally owned by Jean (John) Paul Sr, who was the world champion Porsche racing driver from 1976 to 1984. This was his personal car. Currently ready for race track, but is also street legal. 935 Twin Turbo Body style, gigantic moby dick tail, 3 liter opposed air cooled six Porsche engine, JLP special, 5-speed single disc clutch. Smoothest gear shifter ever built by Porsche. Porsche rear engine. Luxurious Porsche interior. Built by John Paul racing from molds that take 5 months to make and won at Daytona 500, Sebring, and Pocono. The car is Kevlar and aluminum reinforced hand laid up fiberglass, just like very race car John Paul used to win two world endurance championship. This 935/79 molded body style won teh 1979 World championship of Makes. This car is extremely rare being the last and best of three JLP prototypes. Over 50 IMSA world wins with this 935 body style. The Classic film Cannonball Run was filmed at JLP Racing Lawrenceville Georgia featuring these 935 racers. John Paul won the World Endurance Championship in this MOLD in 1980 and the IMSA Championship in 1981 using this body mold. In 1982, 7 starts and 5 wins. In 1982, John Paul, Jr. led the Camel GT Championship Series while John Paul Sr led the Camel GT Endurance Championship Point standings. Extremely detailed documentation book featuring pictures at Daytona and other race tracks, voluminous race histories, receipts and work done by John Paul, feature articles about the production methods of John Paul in building his car. Articles included are from USA Today, Autoweek, and others. Car was inspected by Al Holbert's race mechanics (winner of Daytona 500) last week - full documentation of all work done. THIS CAR IS NOT A REPLICA.

Perhaps you were too young to remember JLP racing? Anyway, TONS of drug money went into their race cars of the time...even Brumos wasn't competitive. I guess I can say this because the arrests and convictions are now public record. The way I heard it, the only thing factory about the race cars was some of the mechanicals...bodywork, tube frames, suspensions all done by JLP racing.

As far as this street car is concerned, well...advertising is advertising.

But JLP racing did kick butt...until the bust happened. Other racers at the time were also rumored to have been funded by drug money.

Those were the days, my friend...we thought they'd never end...

Pretty much my thoughts on this obviously street car...now, if it was one of the old JLP race cars, documented? $$$$ to somebody.

That's rich.

"Features include six-cylinder engine just like the car that won 24 hours of Daytona!"

"Includes four-wheels - just like cars that won at Daytona, Sebring, and Pocono!!!!!"

Very interesting. I believe I know this car from it's original configuration.

John Paul lived a few miles from me in Florida back in the day. At the time I was in college and owned a '74 911. He had one of the first turbos I'd ever seen on the road and he drove it rather briskly when he was around.

I have two interesting stories on it. My dad had installed a CB and PA system in his Peugeot at the time and one day on the way home from work, John Paul comes blasting up behind him and jumps around him right before a light which happened to turn red and catch both of them out. My dad was mildly pissed so he got on the PA and told JP that if he didn't slow down he was going to take that Porsche and shove it up his a**. JP stuck his head out the window just as the light was turning and yelled back "you've got to catch me first!". Then he was gone....

The other had a less happy ending. I let a friend of mine drive my 911 and we just happened to be driving down this windy road that JP lived on. I always kept an eye out for his car and on this day as we went around a bend he came flying by heading back home. I told my buddy to pull into a drive way and turn around and let's go back and stop in and see the car. So my friend slows up fast and turns to pull into this driveway but there was mud on the ground. He locked up the front wheels and wound up sliding into a tree totally smashing up the front bumper. We never did make it to JP's house. Probably for the best since I might be in jail now too.

Anyway I wasn't sure if this was the car or not but JP's car I distinctly recall was a baby blue color. Probably Gulf Blue as we know it today. Then I saw the engine compartment pic and there it was....Cool!

that 935 motor looks just like my sc motor, do you think someone stuck a 935 engine in my car at one time or another?

JLP racing did make some street cars that used 935 body work. They ran a full or half page ad in Road &Track for them. I saw one of the cars at the IMSA Daytona Finale in about 1981 or so.

John Paul Sr was in the slammer for a few years. He tried to kill a federal witness. John Paul Jr. served a short term and went back to racing.
Their drug operation was huge. They were growing pot underground cave in North Georiga. I had a friend that was on their race team. He said they paid them in cash. JP Sr was hiding in Switzerland and was tracked down because his MB SEL 6.9 was being stored in Ga. The FBI tracked him via his payments for the storage of the car. He must have really liked that car.....

I think the description of the car was written by the Kruse legal staff. If you read it very slowly and very carefully they don't misrepresent the car. They never say it was a race car. "Over 50 IMSA wins with this 935 body style." Right.

I would love to know which one of Al Holbert's race mechanics inspected this car. I have an idea who it might have been but I'm not sure - and besides he'll sue the hell out of me if I mention his name. I used to live just down the street from Al Holbert and knew a lot of the guys at the shop.

Why the he*l would a race mechanic be used to verify a street car that was never ever near the Holbert operation?

This one is really bad. Just read all this Kruse bs very carefully though. I don't think they're misrepresenting the car. They're just hoping for a bidder that can't read.

Wow, glad someone else noticed that!!!

URY914: Paul.. it's nice to see/hear of others that know they're racing history and Porsche lore! You were spot on with your comments as I too remember the JLP racing from the good old days. It was a shock to the racing community when, and the way everything went down.

Paul
