Felt like MacGyver - 911 no start

It was a nice day here in Charlotte yesterday, so I gave the 911 a quick bath and headed off to Starbucks to do some work. I had a conference call at 2pm that I wanted to take at home, so I left Starbucks at 1.

I was first upset because a bird had s*#t on my clean car (never fails). I get in and twist the key and the car stumbles a bit. Twist it again and it cranks, but that's it. Now I'm a bit pissed. I open the lid to poke around, thinking maybe something got wet washing it (ran fine on the way over however).

Long story short, I took my con call in the car, gathered my thoughts and deduced it was the fuel pump relay. Certainly can't find one anywhere near where I was. What to do. It was a short walk over to Lowes where I bought some wire and a wire cutter/stripper - $10. Walked back to my car and fashioned up a jumper to jump pins 87A and 30 where the relay plugs in. I was home 15 minutes later!!!!

Todd

I wonder if your solution is also an accepted method for testing out a suspect red cap fuel relay?

My intermittent fuel delivery problem is hard to determine because my spare relay was acting up before I took it out and replaced it several years ago.

Brings to mind a few things:

I usually carry a small rag or paper towels and a small bottle of water for those inevitable bird surprises while parked.

I also carry a couple of spare FP relays.

If you didn't have a spare you could have used one of the black ones for a short time.

Glad you got going. BTW what kind of work do you do that you go to a Starbuck's to do it?

I had thought about stealing one of the other relays, but my fuze cover is in the garage (some work going on under the hood - removing AC), so I wasn't sure which relay wasn't critical, like a horn for example.

As far as working at Starbucks, I do IT stuff, so if I'm not at a customer site I put a few hours in at Starbucks because the 2yr old at home is too distracting .
