915 Roller Bearing Question
I'm starting to re-assemble my 915 and have a question that I can't find the answer to in any of the manuals I have. I took pictures when I disassembled the trans, but since I found one major assembly error by whoever previously worked on the trans, I'm questioning everything.
I've attached a picture of one of the two roller bearings that goes on the front end of the main shaft and pinion shafts. If you notice on my picture, the outside of the bearing cage is shaped differently on one side. It turns up slightly where the other side of the cage rounds downward. Interesting enough, the inner race on the side that turns up extends out further thus providing more clearance between the gear or thrust washer that's next to it. The additional clearance is about .015. So my question to those intimately familiar with 915's or bearings in general, does it matter which side of the bearing faces which way? Thanks

Here's a shot I took of mine while I was working in there a few years ago. The side with the sharper edge goes against the gear.
Hope this helps! ![]() ![]() I took a lot of pics and posted them in this thread. Randy

Thanks Randy. That's how it was when I disassembled the trans. Just wanted to be sure.
