Glass install on "My Classic Car"
Hey, I was just watching My Classic Car, and they showed the rope technique for installing windshields. I am going to be doing this in the next month or so and was kind of sweating it. Now that I have actually seen it done, I don't think it will be too tough. The episode will be on again Monday at 2am central, set your TIVOs!

i use 14 gauge insulated wire. have someone help you by applying slight pressure on the outside of the glass while you pull the wire. silicone spray on the rubber and opening work well.

Did it a couple of months ago, very easy.
The choice of rope is important though ![]() |

Installing. To remove them just carefully cut the rubber.

The hard parts:
1) Getting a windshield out in the first place without breaking it when you want to re-use the seal. 2) Getting the window trim to sit correctly in the seal groove, at least on early cars.

You're right, they didn't have trim to deal with, and I have heard that can be tricky. I'm just going to try and take my time.

Less brakes, more gas!

The windshield was a PITA for me. I had a friend helping and we did it about 4 times before we could get the seal to seat right. I still have a spot at the upper corner drivers side that the seal falls into the frame...
My one bit of advice is use a thick bit of string/wire. This will prevent it from slipping out of the frame instead of pushing the seal edge when you pull on it. Some people also have been known to use some plumbers putty in the corners so support the seal and help ti fit better. -Michael

When we replaced the seal on the Targa's rear window we used clothes line. It had a plastic coating and was thick enough to hold onto to pull. My husband pushed on the window as I pulled the rope. Just take your time. Don't jerk the rope. Carefully pull as the assistant is pushing on that area of the window.
