Fair Price, Rebuilt 2.7 Engine done right

A question regarding fair pricing on the following engine.
I have a newly rebuilt 911 2.7L engine built at Precision Motion in Riverside. All the machine work was done at Ollie's. It's a 7R Case, and we had it shuffle-pinned, line bored, added case savers, a late model pressure relief, new standard bearing, new rod bushings, new valve guides, new valves, new rings, new chains, all new gaskets etc. Engine price includes CIS if fuel injection is desired, or is optionally offered with carbs, we'll include proper cams but Webers would be at additional cost. The engine will be sold with a 6 month warranty, or 1 year warranty if we do installation into the car. I've had it offered at $6500, and I'm not getting much interest. I've got a chunk of change in this engine. What would be a fair price for such an engine, am I far off of the mark, or just need to wait longer for the right buyer.

$6500 is a good price. I don't think you could rebuild the engine yourself, have all this work done, and end up paying less than this. And that's starting with a rebuildable core engine. So this seems like a really good deal. Your only problem is going to be the fact that most people that are replacing a 2.7, are replacing it with a 3.0 or bigger. There are buyers out there, you just have to wait for them. Best of luck.

Given the current economy, I don't think that the average joe in the market would want to pay any more than say the $5,000 range, probably a little more seeing how it's more than just a long block. If they wanted to pay full price, they would have their own rebuild done, their way. Unless you're willing to wait for the right buyer you may take a beating in order for a quick sale. Just my opinion.

In this economy people are looking for bargains. Your price is fair, but that does not mean you'll get $6,500. If you NEED to sell if you might have to drop $1,000. Otherwise wait. Someone who has a toasted 2.7 and wants to drive this spring will snap that up.

My race 2.7 (built on an early aluminum case) by Precision Motion in 2004 cost me $$ more than $6,500, and that's not including the 46 PMO's that I bought through Precision. If the build quality and performance is anywhere comparable to my engine, $6,500 is a good deal and a fair price. I was treated fairly by Don Kravig and the Precision crew, and they have a lot of expertise on building good quality and reliable early 911 engines. However, the economy is what it is and the pool of potential buyers is somewhat limited now. I'd consider selling my '65 Malibu SS but under the current economic conditions I am not going to give it away either.

I'd say it's a fair price. If you can hold on to it until the right buyer comes along, you might get $6,500 for it. I had my '77, 2.7L rebuilt a few years ago. The whole thing came to $8K for a long block. That was with me doing the disassembly and gofering parts. It also included a new set of J&E's and Nikasil's, oversized main bearings, a race balance, machining the case, etc. It didn't include shuffle pinning. The old guy who assembled it also only did it for $600. He was the owner of Motorworks locally and did it for his old-time price rather than the going price at the shops around here at the time.

be sure to point out that it was done by Ollie's AND post a scan of their invoice etc. on your ad. good work adds value and they have an xlnt rep that is decades old.

Sounds fair, unfortunate the economy is in the way it is and hopefully there will be a quick turn to keep us all in business and able to enjoy our cars, let alone support the companies like you that keep us going.
