Question dme unit diagnosis

I am thinking of putting a steve wong chip in my 85 carrera. I dont know when or if the dme unit has been replaced. I have replaced the dme relay as a matter of maintenance
but have done nothing to the dme unit. Should I A. just drive it B send it to wong fop a rebuild and chip installation. Or C. have it evaluated by someone and see if it is ok.
I am looking for the best bang for the buck but also want the best dependability??

If the car drives then your dme unit is fine. Install the chip then be done with it.

There is no real reason to do a "preventive rebuilt" on the DME. If someone suggests that he most likely is just taking you for the money. The only thing it would do is buying you a warranty to cover for future failures.

As long as the car runs without issues the DME is fine. Once it fails you can send the DME for an evaluation and potential repair. There are no items inside the DME that wear out over time in the classic sense. While electronic components have a finite lifetime their wear mechanisms are driven by different factors. For one you can not determine how much "life" is left in a specific components without destructive testing.

If you are comfortable with working on electronics you can easily swap in a new chip yourself. If not I think Steve can do it for you. Check with him.

Cheers,
Ingo

If you have the option to send your DME into Steve, I would do it he can upgrade your chip connector to a 24 pin connector. He can also check to see if solders need maintenance. I am not sure how much he charges for it but he can also tell if it needs to be worked on for you.

I believe he sends it out to bench test it.

Contact Steve, he will take care of you like many of his followers.
