Needle bearing picture anyone?

Can anyone provide me a picture of the needle bearing on the clutch cross shaft?

My search shows some pictures of various components but none of the parts are listed as 'needle bearing'.

If no-one has a picture, could someone confirm the bearing is retained inside a sleeve cylinder of sorts? This is all I can find listed when I search for a needle bearing.

Thanks
Mark

There is a cup bearing, similar to a universal joint cup, with needle bearings in it. One on each side of the shaft with aseal on the end. I just replaced mine with the updated bronze bushings. This is supposedly a weak spot on the Carerra. Mine had 75000 miles on it and it worked fine although it was dry and starting to rust onto the shaft.

So you replaced the needle bearing with the bronze bushing?

Mine's out at the moment whilst the engine is being rebuilt. I think it's seen better days....

That arm is no longer available, you should replace all the parts with the updated pieces.

Mark,

You may want to poll the collective wisdom on this one. There is an "update" available that is a solid bushing. It is questionable, however, whether this is better than a properly installed and lubricated needle bearing.

Has anybody else been told that missing needles are the primary reason for failure? What is used on race cars?

I know that the grease prematurely goes away and you are left with a dry bearing that starts to wear into the cross shaft then becomes stiff. The updated unit comes with a new shaft and bushings that are self lubricating bronze or some other material. Porshce had an update kit but you have to enlarge the holes with a special size bit and use a different set of bushings, which seemed to be a pain while the other kit was RTG. (ready to go)

Thanks Steve. I've got that picture. The part numbers don't actually say 'needle bearing' so which number is it? Number 9 I think.

Sorry...just stupid, and anal about getting this right.

Actually, with all the work that had been done on my car (3.8 and RS updates) a few years back I find it strange that the fork was not changed over to the 92 model (porsche update), thereby switching to the soild bushing.

However, the feel of the clutch recently told one of the mechanics I saw, that the needle bushing was in need of replacement. When I spoke to the mechanic who is doing my clutch at the moment I told him I wanted a new needle bearing inserted and he said no problem. I assume that if he found the the fork was indeed an updated one, then he would have said something along the lines of "Hey, you dont have one of those old original forks with needle bearings. I'll replace it the solid bushing though."

Problem is I dont have any records of what parts were changed on the car during the update and I dont know enough to be able to identify these parts by sight.

Thanks for your help guys.

Finally been home to check my Bentley. It says...

On transmissions built from April 6th. 1989, this update was part of the factory production.

This is on the G50. How much different is this on the MY1989 964 where I believe the update is suppose to be from the 1992 model?

In other words are there at least two updates, one in April '89 and another in 92?

And is all this compounded by having a C4 as in my case?

Thanks for any clarification

Mark

Mark,
Here's a picture we took before updating my G-50. Old on top and new on the bottom. Hope this helps.

Thanks Todd. I will print the picture and compare to what I have. The new one is quite different!

Anyone know whether the clutch cross shaft and bearing (updated) is different in the 911 '89 vs 964 '89 C4

I ordered the needle bearings from our host and now noticed that they are both the same, i.e. neither has the hole shown above to allow for the bolt that holds the tab in place. Can't seem to find anything on Pelican other than the "no hole" version...
TIA
