Left tail light short, Help
Gents, today started to go for a drive and out of the blue no left tail light. Fuse was blown, replaced and blown again. Removed the left tail light assembley, and all was fine. After replacing the tail light and another fuse , all is working fine. Any ideas? Thanks

Only that you may have jiggled a wire loose that was making contact creating a short. You might do an inspection and clean up of connections.
Another thought is the stalk on the steering. I'm not sure what all goes thru there, but it seems to me everything. |

I had the same problem on my 86 and it turned out to be the light bulb sockets in the pot metal assembly, bought a used one in great shape and all those troubles went away.

Thanks I will check that, hate to be out and about and the red lights go flashing and they are not mine.

My '86 Carrera L rear taillight would not work after I replaced the bulbs and cleaned the taillight assembly, checked the connections and the fuses. The relay (or some such electrical part) under the dash in line with the light switch was bad. I removed this and the system worked fine. It is easy to fix although it costs about $20-30 works fine without this part.

It sounds like it's okay for now. If you want to be thorough and actually find the source of the short circuit, do this:
Remove the tail light housing, then locate and ID the source wire for the tail light. A color-coded wiring diagram helps greatly. Using the ohmmeter or continuity tester setting on a DMM, connect one test lead to the source wire and the other test lead to the ground wire (brown). Wiggle the harness back and forth and see if you can simulate the short to ground (meter reads continuity between source and ground). If so, remove the tape wrap from the harness and carefully inspect the source wire. It's usually the area next to where it enters the metal housing. The insulation may have been compromised allowing the bare metal conductor to bypass the bulb to ground via the housing or an adjacent ground wire. Hope this helps. Sherwood |
