Fuel line fitting decision

I've read a bunch of fuel line replacement how-to's here, including Jerry Brinkley's and others, but apparently it didn't help, since I have a question about the Aeroquip/BAT AN fittings.

I thought the fittings I wanted all had the spherical (male) end inside the female swivel, (picture # 1), but they don't. Does anyone make an AN compatible version? Or is it OKay to drive on and use these without the internal mating surfaces I was originally expecting to get?

Thanks!

I'm going the route of custom AN style fuel lines & fittings for the two rear lines (tunnel to filter, regulator to tunnel) due to Webers. I plan to use the M14x1.5 to -6AN adapters from BAT (AF14AN6S) for both in and out of the filter, and the "Straight Metric Female to AN" fittings (FS-1406F) on the two custom lines where they attach to the OEM lines at the rear of the tunnel.

Note: I decided to use adapters at the filter for a couple of reasons:
1) I prefer to use a 120 degree fitting at the top and these are not available (at least from BAT) for a direct metric to -6AN
2) If I ever decide to go with a different fuel filter later and the fittings are not 14mm, all I need to do is purchase new adapters rather then replace the fittings

Hi Frank,

My project is not as ambitious, but I may go the custom route for the 2 lines I want - looks like I may have some extra hardware leftover if I can't do what I had intended.

Although something is telling me I don't have the entire story. I looked at the BAT metric adapters (considered for the rails), and while the threads fit, shouldn't the internal mating surfaces be compatible (convex to concave)?

ps - my plated fan is in the mail btw.

You would need an adapter to mate the metric end to the AN fitting. If you try to make the ball end seat in the tapered end it will leak. Is that what you were asking?

yo, i heard my name, lol

what exactly is the question? not that I'm an expert but look at this pic, don't your adapters look the same? there are steel and the Al ones. JIC and A/N are the same. They seal on the lip.

AN hose ends are always female w a 37 deg internal concave seat.

Metric hose ends are available either way, but are usually female fittings w a round or ball shape nose. (This is somewhat contradictory I know.)

The fitting at the top left is a Metric male hose end. It has a 60 deg concave seat.

I think you want a AN hose end with a male 37 deg cone as shown on the Blue Metric to AN adapter.

Not available on AN hose ends.

However, just about anything can be done in Metric, just give us some specific thread sizes you need.

I have many different fuel fittings, including 120 deg & 180 deg that are not commonly available.

I also have these in the larger Oil Hose sizes in case anyone is interested.

Dean / jbrinkley,

Yes, that's my question - In jbrinkley's pic of the adapter and the OEM connector, I didn't think they were compatible, but it sounds like they are. I have the adapters, just had seconds thoughts I guess.

What may have thrown me off was jbrinks' use of the black and gold BAT - w/o the need for the extra adapter for the lip on the rail. (looks alot cleaner and is shorter).

I guess the only other question I had deals with mating a connector onto the fuel regulator. The combination of the metric adapter and the AN fitting make the whole configuration just a little bit long, whihc may not clear the edge of the intake manifold. Any trick to this? Of course all my probs my go away if I assemble the line with the regulator removed from the intake bracket.

Thanks tons for your help guys.

what I have

I need to do the lines in my 88 911 soon. Does anyone have any experience with the lines that Len is building?

Why not fit a Metric end at the Regulator and a AN fitting on the other end of the same hose?

This is done all the time w Oil hoses.

Hi Len,

Do you offer a full fuel-hose kit for the 3.2 (similar to what you show on your site for the 944)?

Price?

Len, Thanks - our posts crossed. I sent you email earlier.

The ball end fuel fitting looks like it is for crimp style connection.
I already have AN.

In trying to mate the new AN to the fuel rails (metric), I can't use the blue adapter you mention, since the threads on both the rail and the adapter are male.

And I guess my original question was related to the adapter I bought - is it the same as the 37 degree ball?

What size AN fitting are you using? Is it AN-06?

I will check to see if this size AN fitting will assemble on to a Metric hose. Don't know for sure.

I can provide a hose of any length w a Metric end to fit your press reg.........

the black and gold are the spendy ones from BAT and are regular hose ends with metric to fit the rails, filter, damper and regulator. I think you know that.
As to the regulator question you talked about. Mine was exactly like your picture, steel/cad adapter to a regular -6 hose end, I think 120 degree to side step any rubbing, easier to do dis mounting the FPR. But possible without. This is what was on mine. Damper side was the regular black and gold.

As to the rails, the cheap way is the steel adapters like in your pic. It sounds as if you have these, but want the black and gold ones? either way works, one is cheaper.

I'd also say that having boxstergt make them up would be way easier than making all these lines yourself. But it's not that hard once you have all the right fittings, and probably close to the same money.

You mention a 120 deg fitting.

Is this what you are trying to replace?

Dan, I meant 30 degree like in your picture, to the pressure regulator.
I'm sorry for messing that up. Don't mean to confuse anyone.

I just checked, and I do have available Metric hose ends for your AN -06 or AN-08 SS braided AN hose.

This means you do not need an adapter. Your AN hose will fit directly against your Metric Damper or Reg.

I will have more info tomorrow when I am at work.
