I check my torque wrench by putting the square drive in a vise, extending the arm out horizontally, and pushing down precisely 1 foot from the center of the square drive while standing on a bathroom scale. With the wrench set to 60 ft-lb, I should be 60 lb lighter when the wrench clicks.
I'm sure it looks odd, but it works. ------------------ Graham Archer 83 911SC Cab |

The vise and bathroom scale method sounds good, but I'm still waiting for a response I like better. For example, "Take your torque wrench to any NAPA store," or "All the Snap-On truck have testers and they'll calibrate yours for free if you catch them."
So, who's gonna say something like this? ------------------ '83 SC |

A lot of aircraft folks have a test block. The aluminuim motors in planes are also very touchy. Go to an airport that has a FBO with a shop.

Any Sears service center can send Craftsman torque wrench in for calibration, but whether they will do it for an 'off' brand is questionable. With their shakey financial standing, they should be willing ... one would think!

Hello
Who did manufactor or sale the tool. Every tool shop has an service. If not the industrie uses Manoskopes. They are adjustet on gauges. Some have under 0,01% tolerance. If you can get one from those manoskopes you can check one specific tourqe. Checking the whole band needs more time. Working on cars normaly doesn´t require high precision. An other simple check is to use a coil wight scale and messure the radiusarm. Well in metric said if you have a to achive a tourqe from 140 Nm then you have to pull with 140 N at 1 meter radius ( craft arm ). If your redius arm is 05 m then you have to pull with 280 Nm, at 0,25 you need 560 Nm. Grüsse |

Twice each day I drive past an airport with shop facilities. I'll check it out. All three of my clicker wrenches carry the exotic Harbor Freight brand.
I don't like Sears as much as I used to. ------------------ '83 SC |

Re: Sears and Torque wrenches
I gave up on Sears torque wrenches after my second one's handle blew up. The locking ring split within the first month of use (on both), and just recently the handle came all the way off after the nuts used to adjust/calibrate it came off. I called and asked about having them recalibrate it, they said they sent them out and that depending on the model it would cost between $90-$120!!! WTF! The wrench didn't even cost that much brand new! Needless to say I did not buy another wrench from them. Chris Bunker 78 SC |
