No engine Number
I believe that at some point the engine has been replaced in my 76 911. It has all the upgrades, so someone knew what they were doing. My question is is that there is no stamp on the block in terms of engine number. Should I be concerned, or is this somewhat normal. Did Porsche sell engines, or blocks with no numbers stamped. What gives

New engine cases are sold as a part...not an engine. Therefore, replacement cases bear no engine number.

do you think the case was replaced under a warrenty issue? maybe the motor failed early and the dealer replaced the motor?

Not sure if they did that in 1976. Do you know for sure you have a 2.7 or could it be a 3.0? Is there a type number on the case?

Since I started this thread, I thought I would answer. I have the service records done by the porsche dealer till around 60000 miles. I assume the original engine lasted that long and eventully blew up and was replaced (at least the case). I highly doubt warranty was ever involved. If I remember the warranty was only good for 12-24000 miles. I'm sure they all lasted past that mileage

Ty,
Strange! I have TONS of records for the car but none showing engine work. All of the shops were Porsche specialty shops which must be of some comfort. Glad that the bottom looks good! I never noticed that it didn't have an engine number. Wonder of the 80 engine I bought has one? Cheers, Craig

Pulled head studs and thrown rods lead to a different motor or a replacement case. Check down by the oil return tubes and there's a small round date stamp the size of pencil eraser, it's probably made in the late '70s. If it's an early '70s date, then it would be of value - FWIW.

i will check for a date. why an early date of value?
when i pulled the cylinders off, i would say 4 out of 6 had the top 2 comp rings lined up together at about the 11 oclock position. i did a major boo boo yesterday. i was turning the motor over, and the plastic bag that was in the dist hole got pulled into the motor. thought for sure it meant a complete rebuild. i all came out easy though. the case thing is not a big deal, i was just curious as to why or what would cause the need for the new case and why go the new case route instead of a used one. after all, the bottom end has less miles on it.
