85 carrera removing heat shield under cat???

It looks like removing this would be a good thing. I think it would blow more heat away from the engine with it off. I don not plan parking at an idle in a brush area. Feed black please any down side? I took it off today to clean 20 years of smutz of it. thanks JL

I took the heat shield off my '87 and ran it for awhile that way before putting on the Euro-type premuffler.

With the cat & without the heat shield, the wheel and tire on that side were notably hotter than with the heat shield, as measured with an IR temperature gauge.

Being conservative and not wanting to encourage any premature failures in the wheel/tire/brake area on a 20 year old car, I put the heat shield back on until I had time to install the premuffler that eliminated the cat.

Kuehl:

Thank you for your enlightening series. I will keep them in mind.

I ask about the down side of removing the heat shield from my car one day and .............

Anyone have any technical information of what the results would be of removing the heat shield and still running with the cat installed? My original question might not have been clear, Thanks JL

Your quite welcome.

You answered half of the quiz yourself! en ....lightening
Your car will be lighter.

And,

DW1 answered the other half .... TIRE WILL BE HOTTER

However, if you are getting the car inspected, say for a track event or for a local MV annual, they can
offer a more unique critique.

I am really beginning to enjoy this forum, Love the color and the size of Font on "TIRE WILL BE HOTTER", but I thought you would have italicized the "Unique Critique" thank you JL

I modified the heat shield and mounted it between the left valve cover and the Cat. I put some 800 F thermal material on the Cat side of the shield also. Helped with track oil temps. I'll keep it there with my Cat bypass too.

Color is an option.
Not necessary to use italics on partial quotes.
However, if you stick around long enough, we'll remind you where to put your
"dots".

If I wanted to be reminded of where to put my dots I would enlist in a literary forum, or an English teachers forum or? If I stick around long enough? You been on the forum since 2004 I guess you must be a real ICON around this forum, Give it a rest. jl

I would imagine when driving through a puddle, it would keep some of the splash off the cat and thus lessen any thermal shock it gets. They're pricey to replace.

I don't have a heat shield. It was broken when I replaced the cat. Lots of them are broken at one of the tabs.
