Rats nest of wires

I removed an aftermarket radio, and I'm trying to figure out what wires go where. Everything else seems to work, but the clock stopped right afterwards.

I want to get rid of the radio harness and put the correct wires back together (assuming this is possible).

Well that looks like fun! I would start by removing all the wires connected to the whit connector laying on the tunnel. That is the after market radio connector. If you are removing the stereo completely then you can take out the speaker wires too. Take that thick black cable with the silver male post (antenna) on it and wrap it up under the dash.

Now take a pic of whats left and post it here. Should all be OEM wires and we can help more then.

I've done a little more research.

It looks like the black wire above is ground, not the wire that leads to the engine bay (they are taped together so it was hard to tell one from the other).

The yellow wire that I indicated I had not tracked down yet is switched. So that's probably from the original radio (???). I can probably tape this off (not putting a radio back in).

The orange wire that I thought was switched, not sure what this goes to. I found the diagram online for the wiring harness, and it appears that orange wire is connected to the "Audio Interrupt" and "Remote turn on" wires of the harness. Don't think my car would have either of these features (at least I haven't tracked down an amp, and i know there's no kind of hands free thing going on).

Green wire I think was wired to the "battery" lead in the harness, but I haven't tracked this wire down. Perhaps this is also for the factory wire? It runs through into the trunk, and then behind all the blower stuff and then I haven't tracked it from there.

Interesting (or not), the clock, etc. fuse blew when I pulled the radio. Perhaps the green wire touched something. Haven't put a fuse back in as I don't want to just blow it again until I know the wiring is back to normal.

So, just remove the rest of the harness and wire nut/tape off the rest of the cars wires?

On my '82 the yellow switched wire is next to a yellow/red not switched. both go to the ignition or into the harness that goes there. Green to the battery I would expect to be ground and not powered, but stranger things have happened. Porsche grounds are all BROWN so it may have been installed with the radio.

Best regards,

Michael

Yeah, I've done a little more digging (what fun this is), and the green wire is actually spliced into a wire in the trunk that runs behind the blower hardware, a white wire with a red stripe (who knows if it's original). But, I traced this going the other way and it goes to the trunk light switch, which is a constant hot (although it isn't at the moment since I blew fuse #4).

I think I'll just disconnect the green wire all together. I'm thinking the switched one I'll just wire nut and tape since it was probably into the original radio.

Still have to chase down the orange wire. Might not be anything useful.
