what did i find in the tunnel?

80 911sc targa - in the front of the tunnel near gas pedal, i found this 1 inch bent piece of metal with a dimple in one end. any idea if its important?

also, this brown/white wire isnt connected to anything, near the same location. remnants of disabled viper alarm all over the car but not brown/white wires. could it be anything useful/important to connect?

thanks

appears to be the tab off the shift lever that aligns 5th and reverse

X2... that's all it could be. Not sure about the wire but because it's Brown it's probably an earth (-) for something

It could be but it's a bit far forward.

Does it look like it's been used or is it pristine?

I agree, the metal chunk is the lock out that should be welded to the shifter. It's what locks you in the 5th/reverse gate.

hard to tell if the wire has been used or pristine since there's rust and dirt all over everything. i'll check the p-brake

on the shift lever tab -- if i have driven in all gears since removing shift lever to replace bushings, would it be broken or caused any damage?
i did notice that the lever is a bit tough to get out of 3rd and 5th back to neutral

thanks

The wire does appear to be for the cruise control switch that sits in the tunnel in that area.

Here's a picture of the mysterious tab located where it belongs, on the shift lever.

great pic, thanks.

i just looked at my shift lever and see where it broke off -- is this a case of overengineering or is the tab really that important? i managed to shift without apparent trouble for a few miles at least.

You can see the two gizmos the tab would slide over if it were installed on the lever. It positively locates the shifter in 5th or reverse gear. General havocs ensues if you shift from 4th to 5th and hit 3rd. Very noisy, then very quiet. Even worse, it might be possible to engage two gears at once, although that possibility is more remote, but equally destructive.

If you have the tab and the shift lever and things are apart, have someone snak it back on. The picture is pretty clear where it goes. Otherwise shop for a new lever used. It also comes in the factory short shift kit, if you want to go that direction.

Kudos for not just ignoring loose pieces in the tunnel. May save grief on a dark & stormy night.

Also, note the two white delrin bushings in my picture. Those tend to wear out and since you clearly have the mechanism almost apart, now would be the optimum time to replace them. Our host sells them and they're pretty reasonable. Could remove some "slop" from the works and firm up the feel.

It's there primarily to prevent you from coming down into reverse from 5th. Have the tab welded back on. Do NOT go without it.

Scott nailed it. It's to prevent you from going from 5th to reverse
