Anybody else upgrade from a 964 to a 911 (3.2)

I had two C4's in the past until I bought my present 3.2. Anybody else done this ?
I guess the other way around is more common.

I now drive a 1978 SC... I used to own a 1992 C2...

I lost that as part of a divorce settlement. I've never looked back

Why the change from a 964 to a 3.2? I have a 3.2, and am thinking of looking for a 964, but would like to know the advantages of a 3.2 versus a 964.

Give me reasons to never want to look for another 911!
Hey, I love her, but I always think the grass is greener on the other side.

The 3.2 is a much simpler car. Easier to fix and in my opinion more fun to drive.
Manual as opposed to power steering and generally lighter. It's like comparing an RS to an S from the seventies. Then if you decide to "back date' the car it's always a viable option with a 3.2. (or SC as in my case)

My 964 was a great car but I never felt confident doing work on it myself. I love my SC... It's a great car to work on. Although in my experience I must say Porsche's don't suffer fools.

You could backdate a 964... and I'm sure it has been done. But it seems to make more sense to back date the impact bumper cars.

Wurls, here's a good thread for you. You really need to drive a (C2 manual coupe) back to back with a 3.2 and then make up your mind.

I got tired of all the electrical crap = sensors - battery drain - seemed like it was always something that was tripping that damn ! warning.

It was (964) a fast car though - when you were going 110 it felt like 70 - conversely it's the other way around in the 911.

IMO the 911 is a more "raw" fun driving experience. Plus my 964 leaked like a Great Dane on a walk. Nothing money couldn't fix - but why when I could own a 911 with a G50.

wurls 03-13-2009 04:06 PM

Thanks for the input guys! The 3.2 does seem like a better choice than 964, for the type of person (like me) that hates the thought of there being an electrical nightmare waiting to happen with a 964. True, the 964 might be snappier from torque, but if you live in a place like me where you're lucky to have one place that can fix a Porsche, the simpler the 911, the better.

My 1988 3.2 Carrera is now going to stay with me!

Cheers guys!

Carreras are not immune to electrical issues. You want a car you can fix by the side of the road? Get an early carb'd T. 70 will feel like 110.

I agree. I love my 3.2 and haven't had any serious problems; but every day or two someone posts on this board with a 3.2-related running/starting problem (bouncy idle, etc).

3.2s are full of electronic sensors, but there's no diagnostic capability.

sbarton 03-13-2009 08:52 PM

Just swap a 3.6 into a 911 and have the best of both worlds. :)

Exactly :)

I've had a 993 and a 964 Turbo, just kept going back to the 78-89 911s.

Hi all, just came across this by chance, I have a 1990 targa C2 and am thinking of upgrading to a SC. The reason is the road tax in Ireland, it costs EUR 1566 to tax the car for the year however to tax a 911 SC from 1979 would be EUR 48. So two related questions (1) Is a 1979 SC just as much fun as a c2 (2) if not ( and this is assuming I can find a pretty good mechanic) could the running gear and electrics from my c2 be transferred to an SC shell?
I heard they redeigned the cars between the SC and the 964 but the chassis looks essentially the same to me.

I can tell you that you will have more fun in an SC, it is a much lighter vehicle and far more simple to work on. Parts are far less expensive as well.

I have had a 993, a 965, and a Carrera, but I still always come back to the SC (I am on my 3rd SC).

The 3.0 engine is bulletproof and has a shorter stroke, making it more responsive.

An SC will be less user friendly to shift than your C2, nothing will probably work as well as your C2 (switches, levers) and it will be more noisy. Some don't like these things, but others as myself find charm, challenge and character in these quirks.

Since this is larely user preference, you're just going to out and drive a few SCs for yourself.

I was watching a roadtest by Motorweek on youtube of the 1990 Carrera 4. They got a 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds!! You guys that have owned the 964...does this sound plausible. Was the C4 faster off the line than the C2 because of AWD??
