Flowmaster: my turn (pics)
Thanks to many on this board, i got a Flowmaster muffler #52580 (1 in/1 out) mounted today, and i am stoked at the sound!! I didn't want the exhaust to be too loud, and this one isn't. Approx 20% louder than stock at idle. But mostly, it's the raspy, mechanical, higher pitched roar at higher rpm's that i love.
Thanks to Steve (masraum) for supplying the sound clip of your Flowmaster-this is how i decided on this muffler. And to RandyP for the details on your Flowmaster project. Total cost: $200. couple pics: Mike '86 coupe |

Mik911,
Do you have any pics outside the car? As well, what other tubing did you order?, was it from Flowmaster? and what did you do for straps and mounting. Thanks in advance,

Sweet, and didn't require any modding/cutting of the valence.

Can you post the link to Randy P's details that you used for the installation.

Very nice. Mine sits much lower on my 72. You can see about 5 inches of it which I don't like.

Hello -
The biggest trick is knowing which muffler to use- the P/N above is for a Roush Mustang - crossflow design. Finding a muffler that is in / out on the same side was tough, and that's what you need. Then there's the Porsche factor - no shops wanted to tear into it. But it s a fairly simple job for a muffler shop to install. A few bends, and the new muffler is secured by straps welded to the factory mount, and then to the muffler. Piping on mine is 2.5" in, 3" out. As you can see with Mike's, his shop made a new flange to bolt to the cat, (beautiful job BTW) my guy just cut off the old muffler flange in place (didn't care, it was shot) and welded the new plumbing to it. Once you get the old muffler out, is pretty self - explanatory. Just convincing someone with a torch to have at it was the biggest challenge. It is a noticable change, mostly at higher RPM's. Through this process I had to change my Cat since it was discovered dead from old age. Adding a Euro premuffler made a difference again. Euro premuff really made the note change at idle, and at high rpm's it's really noticable. Less civilized, but not to the point where people roll up their windows when you drive up or car alarms go off, more idle rumble and a loud shriek when you stand on it. Still talk inside the car ' hear the fan puttering around town. As of for power - muffler change alone seemed to make it pull harder on the top end. Only thing I'd recommend is watching how the muffler sits in there, just make sure it isn't sitting too far into the bumper or directly touching any of the metal above it. Dunno if that would cause the center reflector to melt or your bumper paint to bubble, but didn't feel like finding out. $225 installed w/ chrome tip. rjp

Dickster/Stealtn-No, i didn't do it myself. Had a local muffler shop supply the tubing and welding.
Masraum: Funny you mention the valence. My valence IS modified (cut wider). I did this in anticipation of mounting my dual 930 exhaust tip on the Left side only, but was bummed when the muffler guy say it wouldn't fit LENGTHwise (cat-muffler inlet pipe in the way). He said a "Y" from muffler outlet to fit onto the dual 930 tip would require too much room. If anyone has any suggestions, i'd appreciate it, as i searched hi/low to finally find this tip. Mike |

That's great. Sounds like you are very happy with it.
I hope "all goes well" with our new muffler that is getting installed soon too.

Excellent job! I am looking at that same route, glad you found a welder/muffler dude to do it for you. Where did you get the straps?
Thanks for the pics. Where's the other thread you were taking about?

The straps being referred to are simply steel, and they're welded to the existing mount and hang down. Muffler shops use the stuff to make exhaust hangers. Put the muffler in place and tack weld the back to the straps. The guy who did my muffler came up with that idea. It's quite simple actually. Once you get the old muffler out and see in there it's as plain as vanilla.

Looks nice. I wonder if anyone here has done a 2 in 2 out with a Flowmaster? I have SSIs on my car and need to get the muffer situation squared away.
I'm happy to fab things, and I looked at the B&B, but the combination of the mismatch size wise from the SSI outputs to the B&B inputs, and the price, eliminated it. Does Flowmaster (or anybody) make a muffler that has an in AND an out at each end?

I have a Basani where the in's are on each side of the bottom part of the muffler and the out's on either side of the top. All muffler shop did was position muffler between heat exchangers and weld 90 degree pieces of pipe to muffler, lined them up with exchangers and welded on flanges to bolt to exchangers. I then had them add dynomax glass packs to upper part of muffler (both sides) and pointed tips down at an angle. No cuts in rear rs bumper. Iadded the dynomax because the bassani was loud as hell.

The sound is like no porsche I have heard before. Somewhat quiet at idle. A little drone at 2500-3000, and a great sound when getting on and off. I love the sound as well as others. The basanni itself was a great redline pipe. Very smooth through the power band, but loud as hell when you got on it. The whole thing weighed 1\2 lb less than stock. The muffler is tiny but built like a brick. It was stainless steel, but it turned all sorts of colors, so I painted it black. It was not cheap, muffler on sale cost 105. I had a choice of them making the internals as 2 seperate mufflers, or gases coming together and acting like an internal crossover pipe. I went with the latter.

Mike,
Would you mind sharing the name and address of the muffler shop that you used for us here in Socal. I would be interested to swap my mufflers to the one you have.

![]() I'm pretty sure mine is the 80 Series, part number 389-42582, but it might have been the 50 series, part number 389-524554. www.Jegs.com There was a recent thread about using a 2-in, 2-out MagnaFlow, which is supposed to be a little bit quieter than the Flowmaster. I cap one side in street use to eliminate the resonance at low revs.
