Unhappy Where is my water coming from!!!??

My car is an 84 911 wide body turbo, with sunroof. When it rains the floor in the back seat gets wet. REALLY wet. The water bubbles out from under the back seats, mainly on the passenger side. I cant tell how the water is getting in there... I guess it could be the rear window seal, but I cant see any water coming from there. Could it be the sunroof draining into the back of the car? Any ideas on what to do about this? I am probably going to have the rear window seal replaced. But I have a feeling that isnt it.

thanks,

Adam

The first thing you may want to check are the two drain holes at the back corners of the sunroof. Just get a small funnel or tube and poor water in them to see if it backs up. I believe they drain into some tubes inside the engine bay but you'll see real quick if they are clogged. I have heard a coathanger works well to clean them out.
Good Luck,
Buck

I would check the drain tubes too.

On my car (1975) they drain from the rear corners of the sunroof "pan" down the rear pillar and out beside of engine lid.

I checked mine by opening the sunroof and pouring a little water into the channel beside the roof - it should ALL come out of the drain holes. If not, you will need to open up the headliner and find where the drain tubes are, and check up on it - maybe coathanger? Mine leaked there and the water would run down behind the headliner and pool under the seats.

Other places to check are the rear quater windows and of course the rear windscreen - use the spray the water test.

Are you the first owner???

Just a short history:
I was searching for half a year where water was coming from in the back. Only appeared when hard raining and driving fast. Not much, but the floor was constantly wet. Tried the spray hose-no luck.
One day, I removed all the back seats for upholstery. Once I removed the seats, the carpet, and the insulation, I found a 10cm triangle cut in the body's metal !!!

I guess someone was having a 'short cut' on removing the starter...

The rubber caps on the drains at the rear are actually tubes that have to to mate with the end of the metal drains from the roof, If they are misaligned and not capping the tube, the water will drain into the car as it exits the drain. That may be the problem. On the other hand, I still get leaks at times and I think it's the same debris thats floating around in the top that keeps finding its way to the drain. Poking it out with wire solves the problem until it finds its way back.

Thanks all for your posts.. I will do some work on it this weekend... If I do need to take down the headliner.. no big loss.. It really should be replaced anyhow. Now thats another Q. How hard is it to replace the headliner! :-)

In case anyone is interested, I will post the results of my findings next week...
