Well, the new box now has a gig of RAM in it, let's see if that helps performance here. I'm still showing strange signs (maybe a Win2K bug or two here), but the extra RAM seems to be helping now.
How's it look to everyone else? -Wayne |

Unix has its own set of problems...
NT probably has more, but it's what the house is built on right now... -Wayne |

Wayne -
It may be less significant now with the RAM upgrade, but what kind of disk setup are you running? Obviously if your I/O is a bottleneck, the fastest CPU's and hugest RAM in the world ain't gonna help much! Just curious...so far today I've had a little variation in response on the board, but all within reasonable limits. Chris C. |

I/O is within spec.
CPU load is low User load is not high Disk usage is very quiet I think the problem may be with the cache. I just increased the RAM from 385 to 1024 Megs. At first glance, it didn't appear to make any difference. But then I changed some settings in IIS to reflect the new RAM, and rebooted the machine. Since then, all seems good, although there is still plenty of time for the server to revolt! -Wayne |

Well, my current server is using Win 2K and seems to do fine. It was a lot easier to set up as a server than Lenix. The computer that is the server is a real dog in comparison to today's computers. Just be glad you aren't trying to use Win ME, I have never seen an operating system that is worse than that. It somehow over time fills up the Cache and memory so you can't do anything really.

![]() You should move to a Sun box with half the memory and twice the performance. Yes, unix (solaris and all) has drawbacks, like not MS approved, but Sun has pretty nice stuff...check it out... |

Hmmm, 1 GB of memory for my PC = $379. My Server from Dell $1100. Sun box = $$$$$.$$
![]() Sun is probably better, but I need to go with what I know... -Wayne P.S. Please reply and let me know how the server is doing from your location... |

Wayne, from Long Island NY, on 56K modem connection speed approx 40kbps it seems much better now!.
If the system ever gets bogged down again in the future(hold on the guys are gonna hate me for this!) Maybe we could help out by contributions for a new system?. I don't know what it would cost but, conciderring the amount of traffic and numbers of regular users (Pelican is my homepage) I for one would be happy to make a small contribution to a free service which has already saved me $$$$$$$ ![]() No one likes to pay for something that is already free (I am starting to use Pelican mail order more these days) But we would all surely miss this site if it disappeared! ![]() As i've said before, technically this site and it's community are my lifeline to keeping the 911 alive and your collective knowledge is better than any handbook or garage!. Okay, there it's been said, now you can start throwing the rocks! Ben |

Glad to see the search back.
And yes, from Pittsburgh, there is a definite improvement in speed/uploading. (DSL line) Thanks Wayne. |

Good to see the added performance from FL over a bronze dsl. How long had the server been running with 384 MB? Just a tip, keep up on the security patches. I follow the Microsoft security bulletins and most of them are so absurd that there funny.
P.S. That is nothing compared to some of the stuff that I am working with. *choke* p166 32MB DOS *choke* ------------------ Ted Stringer nuke3@juno.com '84 911 Targa aka pocketrocket |

It ran on 128 Meg of Memory up until a few months ago, so it shouldn't be a major problem...

Wayne, make sure you are running your pagefile to be at least double the size of installed RAM. The other thing you may want to do is also turn on the native Windows monitoring tools and start to run some logs to see what is getting hit the worst. The easiest thing to do is press ctrl+alt+del, run the Task Manager, and look at the performance tab. Look to see what is worse CPU or RAM. Do you have more than one hard drive and CPU?
