what oil is reccomended for my 74 911
just picked up a new hobby. picked up a 74 911s with a t engine and tranny. picked up a service book but they don't specify which brand of oil. so what oil would I use? and how many quarts? I will have more questions down the road. just drove it tonight and I have a couple oil leaks. I have been reading about those on this forum as well. I really appreciate this forum. I have been reading it for a while now. thanks in advance

Brad Penn or Swepco 20w50 is what most on this board recommend. You'll need at least 10 quarts.

I use the Swepco, but I think their 15W-40 is recommended for all but the hottest (or serious track) conditions. I even use the 15W-40 on the track, but I have a big front (RSR-style) oil cooler that keeps temps <200F on the track.

I am going to use my car in idaho and not on the track. just back and forth to work or what ever. I will check with the parts company to see what they can get. I certainly won't be breaking any speed records with my 911

I recently switched to Brad Penn oil for my SC.
Prior to that I've used Castrol GTX for years - 20/50 on the Porsche and 10/30 on the other vehicles. Never a problem. Oil is like toothpaste and shoes.....everyone has their personal preference. Likely the most important, purchase a good quality name brand oil and do regular changes - incluing the oil filter.

Hi and welcome to one the best 911 BBS's on the planet. For new folks, we typically want to know where you are located (helps us help you get your answers) and ask you post a few pictures of your ride (we like pictures).
Brad Penn and SWEPCO will not be found at your favorite FLAPS. Per other posts, you want an oil that has 1200+ ppm of zinc and phospurus. If you want to fully understand the issues we face, try this thread --> Ultimate Motor Oil Thread or Why we hate CJ4/SM oils (I know it is very long).

Hey Brent:
Welcome to the Pelican forum and Porsche ownership! Where in Idaho? Are you near C'dA or Boise? I am in Eastern, WA not far from Idaho border. Good luck with the car. If you need help with the oil leaks, let me know.

I will try to post some pics of my new treasure. my name is Brent Frank
I am one hour away from spokane in Idaho. and I have a 1974 911 non turbo. but it sure runs good. I am trying to figure out where the leaks are coming from. actually it is dripping on the exhaust. so I know it is coming from under the engine. I do have someone helping me next week on it. but other than that my car was originally from florida and yellow. was repainted black. she has white leather seasts. power drivers seat. and cool little kids seats in the back area for the kids. like I said. I really had fun driving her. hopefully a life long obsession brent now how do I add pics? |

I have heard that mixing 2 parts of marvel mystery oil with 4 parts of armour all and 12 parts of slick 50 with 3 tablespoons of light brown shoe polish gives the perfect amount of lubrication.
I mix it all up in an old paint can and take it over to Home Depot to get shaken in the paint department before pouring in the oil tank. One other thing, you really should make your own oil filters out of a roll of Purex toilet paper and a coffee can. There are instructions on how to rig this up on the motormeister website. Be sure to use galvanized pop rivets though... I learned this one the hard way.

Brent - on a more serious note - what side is the oil leaking on? How bad is it? Does it only leak when it is hot?
I had an intermittent bad leak on the right side above the heat exchanger. The likely culprits all checked out OK (thermostat O-Ring, oil cooler seats). The problem was a porous weld on the heat exchanger. It would only leak under pressure. I figured this out by pressuring up the oil cooler with compressed air and at about 70 psi, oil started to foam out of one of the welds. You can easily tear into it and repair in an evening (I did all this diadnosis and cooler seap in an evening last summer the night before heading to the track). You only need to lower you engine about 6" to get at everything. Just undo the 2 bolts on the rear motor mount bar and lower it with a jack.

it is kind of hard to completely see where the oil is leaking. but I can see that it is coming from the rocker section? when you look under the car under the engine it is the area where all the bolts and the big silver cover is. I know I am slaughtering what it is really called. this unit has fins on it. the oil is seeping from that right onto the exhaust. I am going to tear into it this week. are there gasgates that go onto those? how about the top end valve cover gasgates? a freind told me he didn't think there were any gasgates. just tear apart. clean and use a special kind of glue? you can smell the oil as you drive. especially if you use the heater inside. or ac. I am going to upload some pics of the car and put some pics on this site I hope later this evening. after the car stops the oil drips for like 2 minutes. then that is that...

I've been running AMSOIL 20W25 in my '74 with stock 2.7L and Webers and have gotten good results. I change the oil and Mahle filter once a year...

sounds like it is leaking from your exhaust side valve covers. not uncommon but there is a gasket and all of the nuts/washers securing it in place are 1 time use. When you change the oil you can pull it off and replace the gasket and nuts even if you don't do a valve adjustment/ though you might as well if you have the covers off. The silicone gasket works pretty good at stopping the small leaks. bigger ones you may look into replacing the covers if they have warped or are damaged or you can clean up the mating surface with a little sandpaper on a piece of glass.
if you take a look at some of the tech articles and do some searches a lot of this will become more clear. welcome to the board!

I have always used and been very happy with the silicone beaded gaskets. Others may have different and more informed opinions about this but I have used them for many drip free years.
