new balljoint notch mating with strut
I feel very stupid with this problem:
Stock 911 Carrera. I installed new ball joints on removed A arms. They look properly seated in the A arm [with the tab in the notch], but the notch on the ball joint stud points the wrong directions [same for both] to mate with the strut. The pictures below should show what I'm trying to say. How did I screw this up??? Many thanks, Gavin ![]() ![]() |

It's a ball joint so it should rotate.
You might be able to get a small crescent wrench on there with one jaw in the groove and turn it to where you want it. Vice grips would also work but you would have to tighten them to where they may leave a mark. |

The stem on the ball joint where the notch is will turn and swivel. That is what it does naturally when the strut assembly is installed after all how else would you be able to turn the wheels. Put a rag over it and grab it with pliers and turn it to align.

OK ... I actually did try to twist the stud with vice-locks, but only very gingerly as I didn't want to mar the stud, but she no budge. I'll go at it a little harder tomorrow now that I know. This is the home stretch I hope: I had the old-ball-joint-removal-from-hell as my first 911 project. That was three months ago. It's only now that I can laugh about it. Thanks for the help ...

When they are new they start off very stiff. Wrap the end with a rag & move it around with the visegrips or give it a tap (only a light tap) with a hammer to free it up. Don't worry, it will move.
It's always best to free them up before they are in place. Ian

joint
i couldnt get mine to move with wrench or pliers without marring the joint, if the arm is still off or if you have an old strut housing laying around, put it on the joint with the wedge pin (or screwdriver) and twist until it is pointing to the inside

If you use 2 pieces of wood and a big pair of pliers / vise grips, it will turn without marring anything. The wood will work better than a rag.
Edit: Even better is a nice bench vise & wood chunks, since the arms are presumably off the car.
