Synchronization

I will be researching further, the intricacies of synchronization. Probably by the time I get to do the sync will have solved in parallel another problem or two.

Doing the sync soon;
My floats all adjusted, fuel miniscus beteen the top two lines of the gauge.
Accel jet squirt mostly even. I must have checked them 30 times. (recently found ml measuring cup in Rx cabinet).
Initial setting
cranks up and idles at 900 smoothly.
Each barrel pulls even using Synchrometer with idle stop screws barely turned in.
linkage not preloading.

At 3000 rpms 123 bank pulls more vacuum than 456 bank. That is why I say doing and not done because I haven't syncronized.

Here we go again, chasing gremlins. I guess I am learning how be better able to detect the total number of grelims a given project can throw at you.

Synchronization

Adjust side-to-side @ 3K using linkage and side-to-side at idle with stop screws and linkage disconnected. When you hold throttle open at 3K use the rod that attaches to the bell crank mounted on the intake manifold since your hand can bias the loading of the cross bar. A tip to help you get side-to-side balance is to get the drop links adjusted to the same length and then loosen the two nuts that hold the cross bar support bracket (mounted to intake manifolds on either end of the cross bar) and use the clearance in the mounting holes to adjust drop link interface with throttle arms. You can tap the mounting brackets and get a surprising amount of adjustment out of them at the drop links.

There is wear associated in the 8mm ball studs and the rod ends that can cause extra havoc with these adjustments.

IIRC I set drop links sort of simlar with all lock nuts loosened. Last ball cup mounted without preloading. Ran it maybe adjusted DL again, a little bettter maybe.

So loosen the CB support bracket on each end now. I post to learn and sometimes like these it pays to keep asking. Working with German parts has me inclined to lean to searching for a faulty part.

How much does the cross bar do?

Hi Bernard,

The end brackets should be loosened one at a time and just enough so they may be tapped to make adjustments at the throttle arms.

Sorry for multiple threads. 1969 Carbs and Electric on Pelican is teaching me more than the subject, also how to better post (not using multiple threads and quoting properly)(and most of all thanking guys for helping so much! . I'll continue working on that. Glad it wasn't mfi, because can't imagine how hard it wold be to grasp the subject of mfi.

Thanks (you know who you are).

BTW the car is not here, and I no computer at the car. I haven't found much on the linkage to give me more to go with.

I was concerned of possibility of bigger problems when I stopped adjusting the carbs, because the carbs balanced (every barrel is the same with the drop links off (and on for that matter) at idle at 900). Big problem was at 3000 one side (each barrel) pulled much more vacuum than other (each barrel).

1quickS gave me some hope for easy to sync using the crossbar brackets. Any other details on the sise to side sync appreciated as well.

If it helps any, Along with you alls (yes I learned how to say that when I first moved to Florida over thirty years ago) help, it is only me ( with your help) working on the car.

Regards,

Had a problem with a float. So replaced the floats. 4 new floats installed it syncs even now.

Richard at PMO says today's fuels can be corrosive for the floats. Though they look good they can leak. One of mine had heavy leak and after a week or two let go and finally sunk creating a fountain of fuel overflowing on the left bank of my car. One of the other floats (on same side) had something in it too (few drops of fuel or solder, I'm, not sure) so I replaced all of them.

I put the syncrometer on each throat and the motor draws equal vacuum side to side at 3000rpm (used Clark aviation head phones for noise reduction giving me zero stress so they work). I think one side pulls about 17 and the other side about 16. I just tightened up the 4 bolts on the cross bar brackets on each carb.

Will button up some more tuning tomorrow.

Word of warning, do not rev the motor quickly with the synchrometer setting on top of the carb, if a backfire occurs there goes your syncrometer. Don't ask me how I know.
