Big Reds on an 81sc?

Does anyone know what would be required to put Big Reds on a 1981sc? I have an 81'sc and a set of Big Reds from a 993TT. I have no rotors or adapters, which i assume will be required. Any help would be appreciated as my lovely car currently has no brakes. Thanks

Your gonna need proper offset rotor hats and turbo rotors for the front. One source is Doug at VCI. What are your plans for the rear? 993 (928- s4's?) work well on the rear with these but will need adapters and to have the ears machined off and I think drilled and tapped. Should work with Carreara rotors back there but check with the experts. Search for posts with Bill Verberg and you will find all the right answers.

I did find some adaptors in my garage which look like they bolt up just fine, but without rotors who knows if they are located in the right place? For the rear i have the 993tt's and some s4's. Does going with the bigs all around make more sense or are the s4's a better option for the rear? Thanks for the advice, keep it coming.

Check out Moses' car. I think he's out on the bleeding edge of what you can do with big brembos on an SC. You will also obviously need to make some wheel changes to clear the calipers.

Ok, so maybe i should rephrase, what rotors and adapters do i need to make this work? I'm hoping for something easily acquired, a kit would be great, possibly with overnight delivery, i'm getting far to optimistic. I have Kinesis K27's in 17" diameters which will clear the caliper.

You will need:

1) A pair of 322x32mm front rotors with the proper hats for your car and those calipers

2) A pair of 993TT rear rotors (322x28mm)

3) Caliper adapters for the front & rear

4) Machine work on the rear calipers to fit the adapters

5) All mounting hardware

6) SS brake lines of the correct length

7) 23mm Turbo MC

8) Pads, of course

If you have the factory fuchs wheels, I think you'll also need new wheels. I don't think big reds will go under fuchs.

Not quite

Most start w/ 993tt, front 322x32mm rotors, rear 322x28

993tt front

the front hats have the wrong o/s for use on a 911, unbolt them and replace w/ flat hats

used w/ the proper caliper adaptor, they look like this installed

The rear is trickier
start w/ a 993tt or 993RS rear caliper, 1 of each here

machine off the axial mounting ears and replace w/ caliper adaptors as used on the front

now for the really hard part, the 993tt/RS 322x28mm rear rotor parking brake is not compatible w/ the 911/930 parking brake, soo the rotor parking brake needs to be modified

911 parking brake pinned into a 993tt rear rotor

installed

you will want 17s and a 23.8mm m/c

You are now in good hands and if your wallets ready you have all the info. you need. I doubt you will be riding tomorrow so you might want to put the stock setup on temporatily and plan this project. If you don't have big power in the back you will have much more braking than necessary. You may want tro consider selling the turbo setup and getting a 993 set up for front and rear. Still need the machining, adapters, MC, rotors and new front hats but a bit less pricey. I did this on my sc track car and it worked really well.

Big Reds are definitely overkill, 930s are all you will ever need.

There used to be a Big Red kit sold here at Pelican, it included all of the mods and parts I mentioned above. Don't have a clue about whether it's still available.

There are rumors that the 996tt 322x28 rear rotor might work as is on the back w/ 911 brakes, I dunno, never did that.

A great alternate choice is the S2 or regular 993 calipers.

The rotors are easier to get, the calipers are cheaper, the adaptors are simpler. They look like big reds unless you get really close.

Ok, a little background for everyone who has been nice enough to contribute. I purchased a clean 81sc with an 87' 3.4 turbo. The motor is twinplug, garret gt37r turbo, larger intercooler, powerhaus headers and exhaust, and blah blah blah. The PO was parting the car and had only gotten as far as the brakes and speedometer when i came across it. I purchased the car for the motor to transplant to a 930, which had a 3.2 and g50. The idea was swap the motors so they were in there correct chassis, however i found a perfect 930 which had over 100k in work done by S-Car-Go in the bay area for a very reasonable price. Since then i have been driving and not devoting any time to cars that have no brakes. I am now moving and letting go of most of my projects, i thought i was going to sell this one. I washed it and decided it was too nice to let go, and i happened to have a set of kinesis k27's and the 993tt rotors and calipers. Soo, it seemed to me that i had most of what i needed to complete it. That said the dyno info i got with the indicated power well north of 400hp, and made these brakes seem like the right choice. I have found a site , guy named INSTANTG who sells a kit consisting of different hubs up front and adaptors for all four corners that enable you to use the calipers and rotors that i have. The kit includes hardware and lines for under a G note. Sounds good to me, anyone know anything about it? Again thanks again for all the advice. i will post some pics to follow things up tomorrow.

Cheers!!

INSTANTG is Steve Timmins, he sells both 993tt and 996tt kits for 911. The 996tt kits use thicker 34x330mm front rotors. His kits are the ones that are rumored to use 996tt rear rotors w/o modification. Never seen one so no comment. But the biggest issue is the rear parking brake.

Mine is a Snap-On, most 911 owners prefer one of several designs w/ a more open deck like the Bend-Packs
