I've run a couple of sets on a miata. Good dry grip, amazing in the rain. The only downside is soft sidewalls so response feels soft, but once you get used to that you don't even notice.

I tried a set of Hankook Ventus RS2s. They had similar dry grip, the wet seemed much worse, and the sidewall stiffness didn't seem to do much for me.

I had them for my last set of tires. I just replaced them with another brand (BFG KDWs) because I was sick of dealing with Les Schwab, the main local distributor here.
Wet traction was extremely good.
Dry traction was very good.
Traction in snow was awful.
I thought they were very predictable near the limit of adhesion, something my new BFGs lack.
According to my records, I got ~27,000 miles out of my rear tires (pretty worn down at that point). The fronts easily lasted through two sets of rears.

Edit: Ditto on the sidewall stiffness issue.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

That's good enough for me. There aren't many options for the old 16" Fuchs wheels.

Hope to see you on the Can/Am, Graham.

You should try buying Extreme Perf tires for 15" or even worse, 14" wheels. I upgraded from 14 to 15 and feel like I've got a lot of choices, but I really don't. Fortunately I've got some really good choices at 15". I liked the T1Rs, but this most recent set is Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R. Apparently my next set will be Potenza RE-11s because they don't make the RE-01R anymore. I've always had really good luck with Bridgestones.

Looks like they make the new Bridgestone RE-11s in the Fuchs 205 55 16 and 225 50 16 sizes if that's what you're running. They'd be another good option.

It's the 245/45 16 rears that are the problem. There's Toyo, some 3-year old Pilot-Sport and possibly a Kumho out there—but precious little else.

We use them on our Boxster, I think they are pretty good tires. I may be putting them on our 964 when the Pilots are done, which will be soon!

I have run them on an 84 3.2 for a year, work great with great grip.

7 inch fronts with 205/50 16
9 inch rears with 245/45 16

Got a bit melted on the track, but melted rubber scrubbed of after a few road miles!

Hankook makes a 245/45/16 rear tire that many seem to have liked: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Hankook&tireModel=Ventus+R-S2

I went with the Dunlop Z1 Star Spec and love them on the track. I can almost stay with the many of the Race Tire guys even though I am running 205/225's.

I run these on the street on the 993. Excellent tire for the money. I had them on the track before as well where they were very predictable with excellent grip for a street tire. Life is very good too - over 15k miles on the rears - which says something on a 993.

I'll be there. Hopefully the new tires will help you keep those pesky Dodge Rams off your back this time...

Yeah right...

Took them out for a spin yesterday and liked them a lot...

I have had a set on my 77 911SC for about a year and I find them good for street use. I had the car on track for the first time about a week ago in the dry and I found them lacking grip in the corners. Howevever I must reiterate that it was my first time on track with the 911.

I have them on my Carrera, they were almost new when I bought it and have another 6000 miles on them now. I haven't had any complaints.

I've been running them on my '87 for almost a year now. They're pretty good, but less responsive on turn in and a little squirmy with the softer sidewall. (Miss my SO-3's!)

Can anyone comment on these vs. the higher performance category "extreme summer" Hankooks? Trying to resist RA-1's a bit longer.

Look at my rear sidewall under severe load on 9' rims in the Carousel at Summit Point. The tires are just howling....

I wanted to add that I can't feel any sidewall squirmyness on mine, but that's due to the 18" wheel and resulting relatively low profile. (35 rear and 40 front IIRC).

You are looking at the other people's rubber there. That's someone's race slicks shedding that you will pick up on a hot track and hot tire. That is not your tire melting and the reason it disappears after a few miles on the street. Look at it as free sticky rubber!

George
