Boring Fuchs, An experiment in reduced unsprung weight and rotating mass.

Since the Fuchs factory put holes in the petals of the 914 wheels-

I thought "Why not bore some holes in those five spoke Fuchs too?"

Less unsprung weight, less rotating mass, better brake cooling-

Further weight reduction is achieved by inflating the tires with hydrogen.
With this performance upgrade I can reach 175 MPH with the top down. ( On the Bonnieville Salt Flats of course, don't try this at home!!!)
Any possible issues with strength reduction have been addressed by backyard shot-peening. (12 guage magnum loads) Be sure to remove the tires before this step. YMMV.
Let me know what you think, and have a nice DAY! ;)

I assume you included symmetric speed holes in the bonnet, right?

Nine9six 04-01-2009 07:12 AM

Hmm,
Why not three lightening holes in each pedal with a smaller hole closer to the center of the wheel, and getting progressively larger towards the diameter.
Were you serious about 175 mph? If so, I think not.

Cross drilling the rotors with 3/4 inch diameter holes will help even more. If you go all out you can go to one inch holes and get to 180 MPH!

It's definitely April 1st...

Rotate the tires parallel to the ground, replace petals with large fan blades and you can make a hovercraft!!! 0 unsprung weight!!!!

That is a two wheel drive car.
It would just end up flipping over the front bumper onto its roof...
(BTW- That would massively increase the unsprung weight. When it is on the roof the whole car is unsprung except the wheels would be sprung weight...)

On the later all wheel drive cars it would work better.

joecrum 04-01-2009 09:36 AM

Plus, no rotating mass!!!

Jared at Pelican Parts 04-01-2009 10:00 AM

I assume you had the wheels re-balanced on a homebuilt jig too?

cgarr 04-01-2009 10:04 AM

If the front edges are beveled it will scoop air in for the brakes.

The windshield is a large contributor to drag. Remove it. And since it's a Targa, the windshield frame as well. Put the rear view mirror elsewhere. Don't forget the aero-bicycle helmet.

a haircut & shave will do a lot at diminishing drag as well.
You could easily jump the 200 mph barrier!!

Although it's April 1st, the reality of drilling holes in the wheels will not cause better brake cooling. At Speed, the holes don't let in any air as they are rotating too fast and act just as a solid piece of metal. Unless you add an air foil to scoop up air and viola, you have that hovercraft as indicated above via joecrum's post.

you need to talk to the Porsche R&D people about the 993 wheels
